Thought I would move these questions over to this section from the Ski-doo section. Sorry for the duplication.

The pinned topic on clutches by Rad Chad is awesome. Now that I have mine apart for the first time I have some questions I am hoping the veterians around here can help with.

Subject is an 89 Formula MXLT, 3000 miles that just doesn't engage smooth, or back shift well.

1. Do you remove the arms when cleaning, or soak the cap hole. One arm is sticking?

2. When staying stock, should the spring be replaced, meaning do they go bad. Stock in primary is blue/yellow and the shop manual says it is 4.53" +,- .060. Mine measures 4.75 which is out of this range.

3. Now for the big one. I thought I broke off off my puller in the shaft, but I think it is just the end of the puller getting worn once it bottomed out. Had a big pop then clutch was loose. But it took alot of tightening. Looking into the shaft, the threads are all there. Does the shaft become solid at the end of the threads. If so, I am in good shape, although the puller has a litle of an "S" shape to it now.

Thanks for any help out there. After this comes the secondary.

1. Remove the arms for cleaning. The holes get gunk in them and can make the arms tight. The arms can also feel tight due to over tightening.

2. It certainly can't hurt to replace the spring. They do go bad, but they don't normally get longer. Are you sure of the colors?

3. It sounds like you are okay, but throw that puller away and get a new one right from Doo. The aftermarket pullers are not worth the gamble.

Pictures would help.

yeah, ditto. if the arms are sticking look at the bushings...i cant 100% picture them as i have never had a similar problem but theres gotta be bushings in the big end and check the rollers in the other end. i too dont think springs can get longer... decide if you want to "keep " it stock...somethins fishy. if you want to keep it stock a new spring is well cheap. i would defiantly pull , dissassemble, clean , and replace the secondary spring. again think about if ya want to tweak it or not...theres a ton of helixes out there. if your not sure where to put the secondary i would set it around 21 lbs. keep us posted.

Thanks guy for the information. I was suprised how easy this job was. It went just like the "directions" said. The reason I am interested in this sled is that it was family owned, riden every season since new, and only has 3000 miles on it. It truely is in showroom condition and is a great sled for the kids and visting family.

I would love to tweak, but do not know what little changes from stock to make. Factory track is only like something like 1/2" lugs without studs, so I am reluctant to make the clutch super strong. Stock is yellow/blue in the primary, not blue/yellow as I originally said. If you have suggestions to make this a little stronger pulling trail sled with good back shift, I am open to suggestions. I do not know what effect spring rates have on performance.
