O.K. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a new sled. I'm looking at a '06 Ski Doo Renegade. They have a 600 SDI and a 800 P-Tec in stock. I'm not a speed demon and I have never owned anything larger that a 600. Is the 800 worth a $900 premium over the 600 SDI? Is the only difference the very top end, i.e. over 100 mph?

based on what you state, I would go with the 600. Its better on fuel, still has lots of power.
Downside, the power of the 800 is nice.

I to had this question last year and I chose the 06 600 SDI and have enjoyed it ever since. Grate on gas and oil and still lots of power to ride trails and off trail.

If you're not a speed demon go with the 600. Biggest difference is over 60mph, not worth the $900 premium. I'm actually surprise it's that much more considering the 600SDI is a full blown fuel injected system compared to a carb/knock/throttle sensor unit.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the 06 800 crankcase air cooled compared to the 07 which is liquid cooled???

NO DOUBT DEFINATELY THE 600
mine keeps up with the 800's to 65-70 then the 800 only slowly pulls away

I love my 600sdi, it has plenty of power. The only time I wish I really had the 800 was on some of the bigger hill climbs.
