Well my wife and I drove up to Baldwin,MI this morning to take our first ride of the season. I should have turned around and headed back home after a hit a patch of ice and side swiped a mile maker on 94 after being on the road for only a hour. But after I inspected the damage to my truck and trailer we decided to continue with our plans. We got to Baldwin, unloaded the sleds and hit the trail. After 20 miles into our ride, I must have turn my head for what purpose I shall never know, when all of a sudden there was the tree. After my sudden stop and free flight thru the air and a few bounces on the trail, I got up and thought great, I just wrecked my new sled. Ok, I did thank the "Man up stairs" for not letting "me" hit tree, but none the less I was pretty upset. I was able to ride it back to the trailer. On the way home, I went to Lake Effect Powersports where I bought the sled, only 2 months ago and received some good news. They said it was not totaled and it could be fixed. To tell you the truth, I feel like a knob, what the hell was I doing? I was only doing about 30mph. Lesson learned! Oh by the way, the trails weren't bad, that was the 20 miles that I got to enjoy. :bash:
This pic doesn't really show much of the damage.

Funny you mention insurance. On the way up there, I called my insurance company and put full coverage on our sleds.

I was just filling out a form for insurance quotes, and they had a link to snowmobileworld. When I was done, I clicked the link because I haven't visited in a little while. Hmmm must be a sign.

That'll rub out with a little compound... But seriously as long as your unhurt thats what counts. Be sure to have the "flying nun" front superstructure checked. There's usually a tweak behind the muffler if the damage is substantial. Most I have seen get bent from a minor altercation with a rock or tree stump, your ski tagged a tree.

Good Luck!!!

Trust me, I'm very lucky that I wasn't hurt considering the size of the tree that I hit! I realized something yesterday, as we get older, we don't "bounce" like we use to when we were younger!
Here's a pic of what the weather was like when I off loaded the sleds. :bash:

There's usually signs when something like that is going to happen, isn't there? My brother was heading out for a ride on his old sled (440 Jag) when one of the springs on his suspension popped out. So he was left with very little suspension in the front of the track, but he was looking so forward to finally getting out, that he simply tucked the spring up inside where he figured it was safe and wouldn't rub against anything, and then later on, his engine gave out. Had he turned around when the spring popped out, the engine would have given out near our driveway, instead of a few miles through town.

The engine problem was inevitable, turns out after stripping it down it was re-built and one of the rod bearings used was worn, and ended up coming out into the crank. Eventually it worked its way around until it got wedged against the inside of the crank wall, and blew a hole in it. Oh joy. I had the 550f then, and had to tow him home. Not removing the belt was a good way of finishing that old Suzuki engine real good :D

Off the topic, but interesting nonetheless? I'm glad to hear you weren't hurt, and the damage was only minor. Hopefully when (yeah, when) it happens to me, I will be just as lucky :)

Glad to hear your ok :lookaround: It won't be long at all and your sled and pride will be running at 100% :D I agree with Thumbdoctor the you should check out all the A arm mounting points for kinks or bends, this area (flying nun) typically bends before the A arms will.
