: Snowmobile Insurance
NewfieBullet 01-22-2007, 03:56 PM It's taken me a long time to get insurance for the Dragon, and today was another day of frustration, though I now have PLPD at least.
For one thing, I no longer have a vehicle in my name, so that meant that alot of companies were stupidly expensive for stand-alone insurance.
The company that I have my house with would have insured me, but I have one too many speeding tickets, so they turned me down.
My broker found another company that will charge me $375 for PLPD, but because of my tickets the cost of comprehensive and collision is through the roof. Get this, even Fire and Theft would've added hundreds of dollars, though what that has to do with speeding tickets in a truck in the summer time I'll never know.
And, if I were to get a seat belt ticket in my truck now they will cease to cover my sled. What has a seat-belt ticket got to do with riding a sled????
It's ridiculous how much the insurance companies can get away with.
RacerX408 01-22-2007, 04:16 PM try being 22 and insuring a vehicle in ontario. good thing for my company and work truck or id be screwed!! clean record, and i'm still going to be paying $300/month on a truck worth around $10,000.
my motorcycle (yamaha R6) is $2000 a year, which isnt bad compared to some quotes i got. i got a quote for over $12,000 a year for a bike worth $5500... makes lots of sense. the $2000 was with a company that ONLY insures high risk drivers.
anyways, my snowmobile is a 600 and i'm paying $250 a year for liability only. i could afford to put full coverage on it but if it does get stolen i cant afford to have a claim on my record. better off taking the loss on the sled.
i know a few people with horrible records, ill ask them this week who they have insurance with and pass it along to u.
Pepsi_fuzz 01-22-2007, 06:21 PM All insurance companies are scams, enforced by law by the biggest mafia of them all: the government. 'cause they're getting their cut too :D
CORY9 01-22-2007, 09:18 PM I'm not a fan of the insurance industry either but I have a clean record and TD stepped up to the plate for the wife and I, stand alone policy and no problem with renewal or sled changes.
From an insurance companies point of view if you have multiple speeding tickets/infractions this indicates you are not responsible and a high risk. Sometimes true, sometimes not but that's just the way it is.

I feel for you and all the young people out there. Both my son's are in their early twenties and going through what you are. My advice is to ensure you keep your record spotless, a couple tickets or an at-fault claim and your screwed.

No to sound stupid but Is snowmobile insurance mandatory in Canada? If so what is the reasoning behind it? Does it just cover personal property damage? Do you also have to have a drivers lisence to ride? Whats an average policy cost and what will it cover...
DOO THE DOO 01-30-2007, 07:13 PM Yep insurence is a must unless your on your own property to where the sled is registered too and yes you need either a snowmobile license ( 12 and older ) or at least your G1 to drive a sled off your own property.
Grant.
team wisz 01-30-2007, 07:16 PM yes you must have insurance in ontario anyway.both to ride the trails and as many of the trails cross roadways.you also must have a drivers liscense or if you are under 16 yrs of age a snowmobile liscense.kids 12 to 16 can get the snowmobile liscense.insurance depends on what coverage you want.you must have at least public liability and public disability.we have on our 2 sleds pl pd fire and theft.this costs us for both sleds 316 dollars per year.most people don't have collision up here as the deductable on our sleds would be 500 dollars.we only have a 100 dollar deductable on our 2003 dodge ram and 2000 plymouth voyager.most parts for our sleds are cheap so i figure why bother with collision and as soon as i make a claim my premiums go up.

I know how you feel I have had a few tickets and one accident that was not my fault as a result if I insured the sled in my name it would have been through the roof. Both the sleds are in the wife’s name under her insurance her sled is $60 per month and my sled is $70 per month. All we have is Theft, fire and $1,000,000 liability no collision. If I got collision the sleds would have been $2000 per year EACH!!!!!

WOW! I thought mine was alot. Still, it sucks that I've got a brand new sled and all I've got is PLPD. Gets me worried leaving it in the back of the truck. I just can't figure out why a speeding ticket or two makes fire and theft insurance expensive, and I haven't had an accident in over 15 years, no claims for anything ever on my insurance.
I've never had collision on a sled, it's just always seemed stupidly expensive.
team wisz 01-30-2007, 09:56 PM man you guys need to shop around.i know my insurance company told me if we go over 700cc with our new sleds we would notice a big difference.but if we stay 700 or less it will remain the same.
murph1411 01-31-2007, 03:04 AM I've had 2 at fault accedents and 1 mojor ticket(lost 3 points) and i minor ticket. I pay $335 a month for a 2002 4x4 silverado. But my sled is in my brothers name. Only way i could afford to sled. All 3 sleds are 488 per yaer PLPD. Mine in my name was 1475 a yaer PLPD.

probability and statistics... period
Icerider 01-31-2007, 07:22 AM Correction I must have had a brain fart last night my sled is 35 per month and the wife’s is 29 per month.

That makes more sense.
bashawrob 01-31-2007, 10:12 AM When I moved to AB from SK I braced myself for a huge hit in insurance. Basic vehicle insurance in SK is bought from the gov't and kinda reasonable. Private insurance in AB wasn't as bad as I thought, I pay about $1300/yr on my '06 F-150. For my 700 and my wife's 500 we pay $188/yr for both. That's for everything but collision. I guess I don't have it too bad.
Rick K 01-31-2007, 10:19 AM all I know is I'm insurance poor...let's see
2- sleds
1-truck
1-car
3-trailers
1-quad
1-house
and on we go help them crooks took all my money..
Rick
If you live in Ontario, check out TD insurance. I have an accident and about 6 speeding tix over the last 4 yrs, pay about $2500/yr for my Dodge Neon to drive around, and was paying about $300/yr for my Mach 1, just for PLPD. TD only charged me $86 last year for PLDP. They increased it to $115 this year, but that's still incredibly reasonable considering my driving record.

fossil 02-06-2007, 08:52 PM A lot of the provincial snowmobile associations offer basic insurance to their members at very low cost

Dude, that's almost the cost of both my cars combined, just for your insurance.
