so I guess I'll be spending some bucks on bearings, slide reails and such, better to find it now than out in the woods.
It did come apart easier than I thought it would, here is about 25 minutes later

Well....................If it's any consolation, You're lucky to have found this while the sled is in the garage and not on the side of the trail!!

on just about any sled,if the speedo goes out, that bearing is the first place to check

Actualy everything is out and free just got to get new ones and put it back together, theslide rails were probably good for another year or so but since it's all apart might as well do it know.

I grease mine after every weekend and it still spits out a little moisture.

let this be a valuble lesson, that is the first place to check when your speedo quits for no other visible reason.

I've always had beaters like the one behind it,this is the first one I can remember having a speedo,or hand warmers or ifs or goodies like that.
The good thing is both bearings will be new and I'll go through the whole skid while I'm at it,in retrospect probably a good thing, better now then later.

Nice work area there scaleman!! :p Who says you need a garage and a lift!!

Good thing you tore 'er apart now, and not later. Had the jackshaft bearings go out on my ZRT one time...not a pretty site.

If you wouldn't have posted a pic I would have guessed it was a polaris.
My buddy had his go out one time, he says, ya, my speedo quit about 300 miles back but so what. Found out the left bearing went and took the speedo cable [the warning sign]. Then 300 miles later it took the gear case one too! The sad part is it ruined the chassi with a baseball sized hole from the shaft wobbling around! Like you couldn't hear a funny noise! Daaaaaa!

i would have thought you would have noticed the crunchy crunchy in the bearing last year.

My, you got off lucky,

I had the same thing happen to my jackshaft bearing on the chaincase side last season.

I thought it was the chain skipping so I just tightened the tensioner down a couple of turns and rode home.

I was about 5 min from my cottage and the whole area got so hot that it started melting wires around the chaincase and then vent tube caught fire.

I was on the front lawn by that time but the damage was done.

I jumped off and started throwing snow on the the chaincase to cool it off!

It ended up heat treating the jackshaft.

What a mess.

WOW, that bearing is messed up! Your telling me you couldn't feel that while riding? I know when my bearing went out on my 95 zr I could feel it especially when I would come to a stop with the sled. Your definately right, this is not a fun job, your lucky and got to fix yours in the summer. I like the idea of greasing every couple weeks or before every ride. I only grease my bearing once a year even though I replaced my bearings 2 years ago, just seeing yours makes me cringe at thinking of replacing them again.....I think I'll do the extra greasing.

My speedo quit 2 years ago, about half way through a 150 mile ride. Turned out to be the PTO side bearing. I never felt a thing. But the bearing was completely shot.

Luckily, but its impresive how long you can go, without a bearing.

Thanks,Fishog, now I don't feel quite so stupid for not noticing.
I'm usually pretty paranoid when it comes to funny noises ;)
