Well my dad is looking at getting a newer car

He likes the Chrysler Sebring and Chev Malibu 99-01s

Have any of you had experiences with these cars

What are the pros and cons?

There is just him and mom at home now

I told him to get a Truck again but he wants a car

Thought you guys might have opinions

Thanx in advance:)

I had a Malibu for a rental and my sis\law has an 02 Bring, I have driven both and prefer the Malibu, more headroom.

I would say the Chrysler Sebring is for the nice sunday driving, if your dad is more of a grown kid then i would sugest the malibu ! its more of a sporty car to drive. Both are great cars !

I had a Malibu for a rental while my VUE was having warranty work done on it. Performance wise, the car was awesome. As for the rest - it left something to be desired. Lots of little nagging things that all combined together to make the car feel cheap to me. My biggest complaint was the seats. Within an hour of getting into the car, I was having lower back pain, and there were no adjustements on the seat to fix the lack of support. I believe that Consumer Retorts actually gives the Malibu an overall good rating on vehicle problems.

With Chrysler, beware the automatic tranny. DC has been working very hard though to fix the quality problems that plagued Chrysler prior to the merger. I'd look very seriously at DC for a car if I were to ever buy a regular car again with the attentions that DC has been giving the division.

They're both decent cars, its a matter of which suits him best. If it comes down to a vote, I would lean towards the Malibu but hey, I'm a GM kinda guy.
:D

In all my years when i was working at the dodge dealer i never saw
one sebring have a tranny go out of it.Now the minivans that is a
different story ;) Gotta love gm's so called normal piston slap in a brand
new engine :sarcasm: Anyways i would go with the chrysler because
for one there warranty is unbeatable plus in my opinion they are a far
superior product compared to what gm puts out.

Ha Ha normal piston slap 3.1L chev up to and including 2001. I know I work for a GM garage and have seen these thinks hammer quite hard. They have all been getting redone the ones at our shop anyway you just have to be firm with the service manager and it will get fixed quick. The 2004 Malibu's are going to be completley redesigned and new so if they can hold out wait a year. It is going to be very sporty.

Thanx guys for the info

anyway

A friend of mine has a sister who has the 99 Sebring and has problems with the power windows and front right wheel bearing(twice blown)

Are those typical problems with the Sebring/Breezes?

Thanx in advance:)

Btw how are the 4s compared to the 6s in the Sebrings and Malibus

Gm's v6 will get about 2-4 actual mpg less on the hwy ove r the 4cyl. I can't speak about milage for the sebring. I don't like them at all unless it's the loaded out convertable. And gm has the 5yr/60k mile warrenty so that isn't an issue.

z800rtx,for the record the 4 spd fwd trannys(604) are the same in the mini van and sebring, the only cars using differant trannys are the LH line(606).the only trans problems in the 604 fwd were in the early 90's that tranny has been in production since '88.I would tend to say these are great trannys as some of the parts are similar between the 606 and 604 as well as the new rwd trans being buit now all using the same clutch's and pumps.the 604 makes up just over half our production.which do you think I would recommend :) .and caleb we have 7/70  .

We just bought a Honda Accord Coupe, he should buy one of those. The Import cars will last alot longer. Our previous car was a 90" Honda CRX it only lasted for 450k, still have and still drive it. It still gets 45m/g.

I'd have to say the Chevy. My wife had one and it was a great car. All the gixmos and gadgets and alot of HP. Just a all around fun car to drive. It is mid-size with alot of room. Our Mali is no more, wife recked it, but it was still a great car

:hallo1:

I am aware of that dooman thanks. :) The 604 in the late 80's-early
90's was definately ,less than stellar. The most trannies to go out of the
vans here in canada were the 3spds in the 97-98 model years, and they
didn't wear out; the diffs wore or blew through the case.About 2-3 weeks
after every snowstorm our parking lot was full of them with big puddles
of tranny fluid underneath :( I'm not knocking dodge products as i have
2 of them myself a ram and a jeep :)

ok the 3 spd. (404),yes these were really a marginal trans for the 6 cyl. engine.they are no longer in production here ,the new light duty rwd trans is now built in the former 404 dept.I also must add I am happy to hear it was diff. blowing as we buy them from one of gm's plants. hahaha.one other thing grn800 I hope your never out of work, one thing for sure the japanese do not trade fair with us or you canucks either.

Back in '99 I had a rental Malibu for a week. We drove from Calgary to Hyder Alaska (bottom end of Panhandle) and back. Nice car, but a new car is way down my shopping list :p

I like the Power, Handling, and suspention of the sebring over the Malibu big time.

IMO the sebring is a great set up.

The only draw back is the 2.7L. It can be a good engine but you have to do your oil change. If you leave it or let it slide. Say good by to it. However 7 Years powertrain warrenty is somthing to think of.

If your buying a used 2.7 make sure you can confirm its been serviced properly. Like Machz said those things need to have proper oil changes or they go bang, every time. If properly looked after they seem to be fine.

In other words do not buy a lease return with a 2.7l in it ;)

Most of the lease returns I have seen have had the maint. done. Valve covers nice & clean inside general cond. good, except some vehicles have just seen too much salt. I just got a '99 300M w/31k on it in sept. absolutely love this car. With 4 people & luggage to Dover for the Nascar race av. 70+mph did 27+MPG. Very pleased

27 MPG is awsome. My Grand Prix only gets about 24 and you have to really watch it.
