: Snowmobiler Loses Leg
Nith Valley Sledder 02-05-2007, 10:53 PM The news tonight (NTV) showed a young fellow in Newfoundland that lost his leg when a track broke. He was holding the back of the sled in the air while his buddy turned it over. The track snapped and severed his leg below the knee. A good warning to all to use a stand with a shield when running the track with the sled raised.
Dave600 02-05-2007, 11:07 PM Damn. That track must have been moving.
Nith Valley Sledder 02-05-2007, 11:12 PM It showed the track with a clean break straight across the track. I'd like to think there was some existing damage that caused it.

That's just terrible....here's hoping everyone can use this to learn what not to do.
permafrost 02-06-2007, 05:28 AM Nith we witnessed the same thing happen at the Calabogie Hill climbs a few years back. The guy came within an inch of losing his leg. It was absolutely nasty. We posted the story and there were others who had heard of the same thing. We ALWAYS use a track stand now.

Downriver Thunder 02-06-2007, 08:40 AM There is no reason to spin your track at a very high rate of speed when you're holding it up. No reason at all. Hard way to learn a lesson.
FreezerBurnt 02-06-2007, 09:18 AM Yup if you have no stand spin the track SLOWLY
We have always spun the track that way
unfortunetaly you get idiots that hammer the throttle
I am bit more leary about it now that I have studs
I usually pick the bumper up with one hand and the other hand on the throttle IF I do not have a stand
Downriver Thunder 02-06-2007, 09:48 AM Same as I do Freezer. One hand on the bumper and the other on the throttle.
winnipegsledhead 02-06-2007, 12:00 PM Ouch! That sucks when things like this happen.
labudda 02-06-2007, 12:18 PM I usually pick the bumper up with one hand and the other hand on the throttle IF I do not have a stand[/b]
us little guys have problems doing that
MXZ600Girl 02-06-2007, 12:28 PM 2 years ago a buddy of mine pciked up the back of the sled, while the owner of the sled worked the throttle, well the track broke and the track, studs and all, walked right up my buddys legs, He is fine now, just a some scars from the studs, but it taught a lot of us around here a lesson!!
snagglepuss 02-06-2007, 02:36 PM Looks like he is going to have to get a job at the IHOP....
doonut 02-06-2007, 03:31 PM Don't think a track stand with a shield makes the practice safe either. I witnessed a track blow off a drag sled in North bay. Destroyed the stand because it tossed it 50 feet thru the rear door of a cube van.
Pepsi_fuzz 02-06-2007, 03:42 PM ... My brother and I were going to life our sleds to inspect the tracks... It's alright we didn't. Though we wouldn't have been touching the gas, you don't know when and accident might occur. I do have custom made stands, for my previous sled. Doesn't work for this sled. Guess I'll have to get another one made, or just buy one that's good enough.
snowrash 02-06-2007, 04:10 PM us little guys have problems doing that[/b]
Tough on a heavy sled like mine,I don't even think I can reach the throttle from back there, but i use a stand and don't let anyone within 100 ft of the back

Do you guys drive Mini Z's or are you extremely strong with very long arms?

:lmao: :lmao:
I always have to hold the back end up when my hubby spins the track... NOT ANYMORE... My legs are so short it would get me at the upper thigh..
snofrog 02-06-2007, 05:29 PM us little guys have problems doing that[/b]
I can`t reach both of mine (throttle and bumper )at the same time

I would pay to see someone do this....Being six feet tall weighing 285 pounds and bench pressing over 400 lbs and I can't do it  I just tried my wifes 07 SS 500 MXZ. You have no leverage unless you are about 12 feet tall
snow4mydooplz 02-06-2007, 06:00 PM I have seen pics of freezerburnt. I believe him ! He's a strong looking guy !

8vo fan 02-06-2007, 06:00 PM If your track isn't 6' long and you sled isn't 600# it is no problem. Even a little guy like me can hold a Phazer up like that for five to ten minutes. I wouldn't even try to pick up an Apex that way.

I bet you $500 you cant do it on my sled (97 form 583) for 5 minutes.
Hold the rear up, while the other hand is on the throttle. I will bring the sled to your door for $50 for you to try it.
permafrost 02-06-2007, 06:12 PM Here is an old thread from 03 it has picks and a full story from Calabogie from CrazyB.
Permafrost
Here it is..I had to dig DEEP for this one

 Sorry.... I need to see the pic
FreezerBurnt 02-06-2007, 07:29 PM BTW I am not talking hold the sled up 5minutes
but rather a minute or so to loosen up the track
poor farmer/logger 02-07-2007, 09:31 AM I'm 6' 250+lbs and I can lift the back end of my 700 xtc dlx Yamaha up to losen the track up. Don't usually need to do it but can if I have to.

Icerider 02-07-2007, 10:10 AM looks like it's turning into a "I’m tougher than you" thread.
LadyK 02-07-2007, 10:30 AM I can beat all of ya...just ask nice and smile real pretty and OTHER folks will go out and doo it for ya ;) :p
cooley 02-07-2007, 10:36 AM looks like it's turning into a "I’m tougher than you" thread.[/b]
my thought as well.
snopro13 02-07-2007, 02:52 PM I saw a track break and throw the track stand over an eight foot tall wooden fence. I know for a fact it went at least a hundred feet before it landed on the road!!! I stay way clear of anyone revving there engine with or without a stand!
poor farmer/logger 02-07-2007, 03:42 PM I'm by no means saying that I'm tougher or storonger then anyone on here. I was just simply saying that it's not imposible to do. What I do is stand beside the back of the tunel and lift on the bumper to get it off the ground and then reach up to the throttle.

FreezerBurnt 02-07-2007, 05:01 PM I could stop a spinning track with my pinky :p
labudda 02-07-2007, 05:32 PM I could stop a spinning track with my pinky :p[/b]
I can leap a tall snow pile with a flick of the thumb...
seriously though just remember what this thread tells us.. do not stand behind a spinning track for any reason. I know I will never do it again.
skidoo girl 02-07-2007, 05:38 PM I can beat all of ya...just ask nice and smile real pretty and OTHER folks will go out and doo it for ya ;) :p[/b]
