FishHog 10-23-2002, 06:57 AM Well, total time was about 7 hr of work.
Cost of steel 1"x 2" = $62.64 (actually have 12' extra, had to buy 48' min)
Cost of Jack = $39.99
Paint - 2 cans =$10.00
Total =$112.63 - Canadian (plus applicable taxes)
Here it is.

FishHog 10-23-2002, 06:58 AM Opps, here it is.
LadyK 10-23-2002, 06:59 AM Looks good Fishie. Good price as I paid $300.00 for my mar-lift at the show last year. :)

Thanks Kimberly,
See, I'm not just a pretty face. (ok, I'm not even a pretty face) :(
I was going to order one from Royal but they were $359 plus tax. Seemed a little steep.
Besides, I got to use my welding skills, which were getting rusty.

boss hoss 10-23-2002, 07:22 AM FISHY-NICE JOB!! !!!
MichYamaha 10-23-2002, 07:38 AM Nice work on the lift :D
bigdude 10-23-2002, 07:40 AM Could you give some more info on it? That looks sweet. I would love to fab up a few of those. Do you have dimensions? Rollers? What is it held together with at the pivot points? Good job, looks great!
ARCTICZRT600 10-23-2002, 07:51 AM Fish, if you were close to me I'd pay ya to make one for me.
LadyK 10-23-2002, 07:54 AM Did you MIG or TIG weld that Fishie? BTW it is Kimberley and I usually only ever heard that when I was bad :)
Sled Dogg 10-23-2002, 08:30 AM You should have been hearing it last night then, hehe @!!
Sweet lift man!

Sorry, Kimberley.
You impress me more every day, you know that.
Mig welded.
I went off the plans that were posted here a couple weeks ago.
here is the link. The only thing I changed was I used all 1"x2" steel, as I couldn't fing 1"x1 1/2"
The plans were good, it really wasn't hard to do.

arcticcatboots 10-23-2002, 10:38 AM Fish, How much welding is involved? My friend knows how to weld somewhat. I would love to do this project! Any way I could accomplish this with minimal welding knowledge???

Not really that much.
If you had the pieces all cut, your probably talking less than a hour of your buddies time to weld it together.
Give it a try.
Now me and my brown nose have to go. :p
C.P.SLEDDER 10-23-2002, 01:07 PM Wow. Looks awesome. I think I'll add that to my welding wish list.
Machzzzz1 10-23-2002, 01:21 PM Nice Job Fishhog.
Only question is how low does the crank go when the lift is fully droped.
In the pic it looks like that part would be touching the floor.
FishHog 10-23-2002, 01:46 PM I should have taken a pic while its down.
The crank stays at the same height, up or down. If that makes sense.
The rest would be 4" high, which is just the 2 pieces of 2" square tubing.
If I think of it tonight, I'll take a down pic.
Machzzzz1 10-23-2002, 01:54 PM I got ya.
in that case its a great design. And it lifted the 600 grissly which is pretty heavy. Probably about 100 to 200 lbs heavier then most sleds..
TallCool1 10-23-2002, 02:05 PM ...not an RX-1!! JK :D
Machzzzz1 10-23-2002, 02:13 PM LOL.
To lift one of those you need one of those hyster forklifts with reinforced FORKS. LOL
JK :D
revrnd 10-23-2002, 02:31 PM When I copied the Marlift, I used shoulder bolts for the pivot points. I haven't looked that close at the plans.
With using the 1 x 2 was there much to change dimensionally? Finally for us canucks what make of jack did you use & where did you get it? Would a Fulton trailer jack work
FishHog 10-23-2002, 03:20 PM It was just the cheapest trailer jack I could find.
Not fulton, and I already through out the box, so I don't really know. I found it at an industrial supply store in Sarnia, for $39. The comparable one at Crappy Tire was $79.
The only dimension I changed was the position of the cross brace, that the jack pushes on. This was due to my jack only having a 10" travel, where the plans said 12" min.
I just positioned it, where it gave me the most travel, and welded it. I never did measure it.
As for the 2" instead of the 1 1/2, that was just the vertical (when raised) pieces, so it didn't really affect anything there either.
Hope that helps.
FishHog
Nice looking lift man, I build one some years ago, and I don't think mine looked this professional..(but it works well)
I was wondering what you used for casters, it would appear they are the plastic furniture type, (which is what my rec lift came with)
One modification I just heard about is, ........You may know that due to the upswept tunnels on many of todays sleds they don't sit level on a lift so you usually have to put some wood blocks on the back of the lift to get the sled to sit there right. a guy in our group just bought a lift from a dealer and it has " longer" vertical arms on the back than the ones on the front. As the lift is cranked up, the back lifts higher and corrects the problem I outlined above.... Very simple, and effective..... just a thought... DooZ
:p :p
Maxwell 10-23-2002, 10:18 PM Great job Fishhog,
I fininshed mine this past weekend. And like you said, it let ya practice a little welding skills that tend to get rusty. Here is a run down on mine:
Steel: $45 US
Jack: $15 US (5000 lb Fulton close-out at Noethern Tool)
Bolts and paint: $10 US
Wheels: $ 6 US
Total $76 US
I did not deviate from the plans at all and everything worked perfectly. Any other SW members thinking about building one should not be afraid if you can weld a liitle and take your time.
I'll posts pics if anyone wants to see, but mine is pretty much identical to Fishhog's

ZR Sled Head 10-23-2002, 10:36 PM Doing it yourself sure makes the price right, plus it looks good.
:)
Rick.
revrnd 10-23-2002, 10:38 PM I checked the Crappy Tire website & the jack they sell has the crank on the side rather than the end as in the prints. Does this affect the operation?
paul yarek 10-23-2002, 10:43 PM fishie,
nice workmanship. :)
FishHog 10-24-2002, 06:33 AM Thanks for the complements guys.
As for the castors, just some cheap plastic furniture rollers. Although they were the lowest ones I could find. Don't roll around very well with the sled on them, but make it nice to position the lift under the sled.
The jack stand I bought had the crank on the side. Just watch that you position it on the bottom, or it would get in the way. I attached another close up pic since you guys were asking questions.
FishHog 10-24-2002, 06:34 AM One in the flat position.
FishHog 10-24-2002, 06:36 AM And one holding up the couch.
Man was it nice working on the sled, without being on my knees and bending over all night.
But whoever designed where that battery goes, should be shot. 1/2 hour and a pint of blood later, I got it back in.
FishHog 10-24-2002, 06:40 AM Those pics aren't the best. Apparently I had the shakes last night, they are a little blury, but you guys get the idea.
Pepsi endorsement was not a paid advertisment :p

arcticcatboots 10-24-2002, 08:18 AM Maxwell, where did you get the steel for the lift? How long did it take you? I was just talking to my buddy that can weld and we are going to try this project one of these weekends, how much more fun can you have then drinking beer, talking sleds, building a lift and playing with a welder???
revrnd 10-24-2002, 02:23 PM Fishie, next time take the pics before you get into the rye & Pepsis :D
Thanks for the headsup on the crank location. I don't know if I'll be able get one built before the snow flies or not. The garage is sort of jammed up right now.
Maxwell 10-24-2002, 05:00 PM Arcticcatboots,
I got the steel at Discount Steel in MPLS. They are off of West Broadway and 2nd Avenue. I bought (1) ea of 1 x 1.5 and 1 x 2.0 in 24 foot lengths. Discount steel torched them in half so I could put them in a pickup. The torching was free. I had extra, so you could get by with less.
Time was about 6 hours, it took longer to cut and drill then to weld. Welding took about 2 hours.
I built mine at work early morining, during lunch, and after work so drinking was not in the cards.... however it sure would have been nice to have a cold one during the building!
Go for it Arcticcatboots and let us know how the beer tasted while you were building a sweet lift!
Maxwell
PS. Buy your bolts from Fleet Farm, they are the cheapest!
