: Is The Monte History?

Does Chevy have plans to discontinue production of the Monte, or are they just trying to put more attention on the Impala by using it as the car of tomorrow (today)? Have seen the Avenger in a few showrooms, and I have to say Chrysler has some pretty sharp designers. At least they are not just rounding all their corners.

I have to disagree Jim, if they were sharp they would bring back the Ramcharger. lol

No doubt have to give them credit in this department, there vehicles have a tendancy to stand out. This is evident by the fact by wife regularily asks " what kind of car is that" and low and behold it's a Chrysler

Downriver doesn't this qualify :):) The best part is that you can get it with a REAL HEMI...426

Oh, I wasn't doubting that aspect Perm. I wish I could have one of each of the Avenger, Challenger and the Charger in my drive.

I am pretty sure that I had read somewhere that the Monte Carlo was going to be phazed out.

I hope not. I have always liked the monte Carlo. Right now we have a loner car a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix ( while the dent in the truck is being fixed ) and it's a very nice car too.

I'm holding out for the new Challenger to arrive. Anxious to see what price it will fetch and what the actual car will look like. As I understand it, it is suppose to be available later this year. I might even have to trade the wife's Porsche Boxster in for the Challenger.

Not sure who this is but found on the internet.

It really doesn't matter who it is Richard, you can bet that since they're riding a sled, they're smiling under that helmet! :D

I love the dual hooded concept sled in the background.... :lmao:

When they first announced the concept Challenger pictured above they said it would be the highest horspower challenger ever produced. If I'm not mistaken the old hemi 426 challengers were 425 horse power. If they get more then that out of the modern hemi it will be smoken. I said all along that they will sell a lot of those cars if they can keep the price competitive with the Mustangs and Cameros and not like the Vipers.

IMO the rocket scientist @ Chevrolet marketing and/or GM Racing that dreamed up the idea of a Impala SS 2 door should be fired. Montes are 2 doors & GM does not build or sell "2 door Impalas". Maybe people should email GM saying they want to buy a 2 door Impala SS like they saw on the race, but their local dealer says they can't buy one.

IMO, this is what is souring a lot of people on NASCAR. The cars are getting so far away from "stock appearing", let alone stock it's not funny.

Maybe Mr. Smartypants (Brian France) should watch some of the footage from back in the 80s when you could tell a Buick from a Chevy a mile away.

"They raced Buicks?" Yes & won the Manufacturer's Championship in '81 & '82 before the Monte Carlo SS came out. The stock Monte sucked aerodynamically, so the GM teams ran Regals. Chev didn't like this so they came up w/ the SS fascia. The Aerocoupes that the Montes & Gran Prixs had were in response to the T'bird.

Now all the cars look the same except for some decals & have a wing. How's that for progress?

Kris, you bring up a great point, and a question that I've meant to ask before. Why did NASCAR go to the modern (cookie-cutter, not realistic) cars, and away from the ones that you speak of, the ones that actually had bumpers and "stock" parts as you say? I guess they were chasing aero benefits?

Jim, you hit the nail on the head. This way the cars body's are all the same. Everyone has the same aero benefits/disadvantages. Plus the new car has some safety things built into it.

Back in the mid 80s when we were @ MIS, they had Bodine's Levi Garrett Monte on display behind the grandstand after qualifying. The fascia & fenders looked very close if not the same parts that are on my '86 SS. Up until the last couple of years, the decklid, roof & hood skins were actual OEM parts (at least the Monte parts were). I wonder if this is still the case w/ the COT.

I think it all started when NASCAR let Ford build a 2 door Taurus. Since then the cars have gotten less "stock appearing".

Speaking of aero benefits. You didn't hear them talk about "aero push" until the cars started getting "streamlined" in their styling. Or maybe the drivers of the 80s & 90s just sucked it up & drove the cars hard regardless how they handled.

The Monte is gone. The Oshawa car plant built the last 1 on Wednesday. No word of it being revived in the future.

Some of the sales figures I've seen the last year or so have been horrible. I don't know what they were like before, but the front end sheet metal change  to make it look very similiar to the Impala probably didn't help.
