: Nascar's Car Of Tommorow
someone11 03-27-2007, 06:18 PM What do you think of the car of tommorow? Personally i dislike it. They're slower than the older cars, the scoop in the front could be used as a bad tactic (blowing tires). I heard nascar is just running them on the short tracks though. Is that true?
snow4mydooplz 03-27-2007, 07:06 PM Nascar.com might have the answer to where they are running, but to my knowledge they have not disclosed which tracks they will run at. They have disclosed they will be running during 16 races this year. They have said they will run at martinsville next week.(short track)
To say they are not as fast isn't really fair as they ran at Bristol and not a super speedway to let us see what they can do.
I DO NOT like the wing on the back.. Reminds me of sprint cars instead of nascars. Apart from that, I think they are ok.

True, but i did notice there weren't as many accidents as previous races at bristol. Plus the accidents weren't as severe.
revrnd 03-27-2007, 08:59 PM I posted this in the Monte Carlo thread:
IMO the rocket scientist @ Chevrolet Marketing and/or GM Racing that dreamed up the idea of a Impala SS 2 door should be fired. Montes are 2 doors & GM does not build or sell "2 door Impalas". Maybe people should email GM saying they want to buy a 2 door Impala SS like they saw on the race, but their local dealer says they can't buy one.
IMO, this is what is souring a lot of people on NASCAR. The cars are getting so far away from "stock appearing", let alone stock it's not funny.
Maybe Mr. Smartypants (Brian France) should watch some of the footage from back in the 80s when you could tell a Buick from a Chevy a mile away.
"They raced Buicks?" Yes & won the Manufacturer's Championship in '81 & '82 before the Monte Carlo SS came out. The stock Monte sucked aerodynamically, so the GM teams ran Regals. Chev didn't like this so they came up w/ the SS fascia. The Aerocoupes that the Montes & Gran Prixs had were in response to the T'bird.
Now all the cars look the same except for some decals & have a wing. How's that for progress?[/b]
W/ the wing it looks like the 4 door 4 bangers w/ the soup can muffler that infest our streets  .
I can't see how Toyota's venture into Cup racing is going to help them. I don't think the people that buy Camrys are gearheads. I sure don't see too many imports in the parking lots when I'm @ MIS or the other tracks.
When was the last time you saw a Japanese brand (I won't call them imports as they like to remind us of all the cars they build here in North America) car w/ a 8 or 24 sticker in the back window?
snow4mydooplz 03-28-2007, 06:39 AM I went to Nascar.com......All I could find out about track schedules was Biffle's team practiced at Michigan International Speedway. (MIS). in the COT
Oh please tell me they won't be racing here.. I'm not ready for that yet. :bash:
REVrnd.......I think the toyota's look like the Rally cars ( well actually they all do since they all look the same now ) :D
joezr2 03-28-2007, 10:02 AM The car of tomorrow won Sebring... and Lemans. I'm talking Audi, Acura, Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari... I'm not bashing but I fail to see any relevance in NASCAR. Talk about a 2 door Impala? How about a carburated.... well... anything? None of that technology will make it into your street car. (It was probably removed from it 20 years ago.) No one watches it for the cars, you watch it to see X-driver beat <up> Y-driver. Why does a front splitter and rear wing make that any different?
revracer500ss 03-28-2007, 12:24 PM I don't prefer Nascar, but when I was flipping channels and espn news was reporting about it, it seemed like a pretty neat idea.

joezr2 03-29-2007, 07:53 AM Oh come on! I try to stir the pot and none of you rabid NASCAR fans want to bite? Fine......<moping>
All in good fun my neighbor and I argue about this over way too many beers all the time. :p

I dont watch it to see drivers beat each other up. I watch it for the intense beginnings and extremely close endings. I dont care too much which driver is first in the end as long as it is a close finish. I love the races that dont matter till the last lap. Thats true racing. I think you kinda spoke for yourself.
joezr2 03-29-2007, 03:48 PM I totally spoke for myself. (And i guess, most of the sports car crowd) I was just trying to spur the discussion! Besides, my point was NASCAR has nothing to do with the cars, it's about the drivers so who cares what they drive since they are all the same?
If nothing matters until the last lap, what's the point of the 498 laps between the first and last? Now I know most people wouldn't watch 10 of 12 hours of Sebring or 17 hours of Lemans like me but there's an aweful lot of excitement in there if you know what to look for. Even my NASCAR friends can't watch a whole NASCAR race but my 12 year old brother (yes, he's 18 years younger than I am) has watched all of SPEED's coverage of the 24hrs of lemans through the night for the last 3 years! And he has next to NO attention span!
Don't take it as bashing, I'm just stating an opinion and maybe one person will check out sportscar racing and like it. I'd consider that a victory. Heck, with 4 classes on the track at the same time there is ALWAYS passing taking place. Besides, there's no snow and we need something to talk about. :D
someone11 03-29-2007, 04:17 PM Oh, dont worry, i dont take it as bashing. I know tons of people that think NASCAR isnt a sport.
Dont get me wrong, i do watch some races all the way through, like Daytona. And to say they all drive the same car. Youre wrong. There are 4 different brands of cars (i think), each one a little different from each other. And, how do you explain one car blowing up and all the 42 others not? There not all driving the same car. Dont take it as bashing, like you said, its my opinion.

C'mon out and support the local tracks in your area....you'll see a good show, us local racers appreciate it, and we give back to the local community every week!

someone11 03-29-2007, 04:22 PM I LOVE dirt track racing and asphalt. Its just kind of expensive to get in. But ive been to south bend's track and its really good. Also been to hartfords one, that was pretty good too. And youre always guaranteed a wreck.
raceguy 03-29-2007, 04:31 PM And youre always guaranteed a wreck.[/b]
Been there....done that, unfortunately.
I wasn't hurt but the car certainly was killed.... :bash:

OK, I will bite ! I can't stand it anymore ! :D
,
Part of Nascar fun are the wrecks, yes, no doubt about it, that's why Bristol is my favorite, however it's so much more than that. It's teams, it's strategy's, it's strategy's going to Hell and haveing to come up with another strategy and so on........It's a game of Chess, it's a game with teammates, It's rivalry's, It's friendships, It's a real competitive sport, and yet it's one big family.
It's horsepower, tires, engines, it's bumpin and bangin and getting that weee little edge. It's defenitely crew chiefs, and testing, and trying to get the scoop on the neighbor in the garage who's fast ! It's MONEY ! Nascar is big business !
On a sour note, Nascar is not always fair with punishments and rule violations.. Nascar imo, does favor certain teams.
I will fully agree that there are far better skilled "drivers" such as formula1 drivers, but I didn't get hooked on that like I did Nascar so now I"m just into it and Love it !

joezr2 03-30-2007, 07:58 AM Hey, I admit it! I watch it sometimes. (Don't tell my neighbor lol)
Funny you mention the rules favoritism. Check out Smokey Yunick sometime. http://www.smokeyyunick.com/ He was there at the birth of NASCAR and his book is fantastic. (Little raunchy- not for the kids.) I bought the book on CD for "Sex lies and superspeedways" and "More sex, lies and superspeedways" for listening in the garage while I'm working on things. THe first one is th ebook read by John Delorean! The second is read by an assortment of people that I'm sure you'll recognize a few. If you like cars or racing in general you'll probaly like this. It's full of the cool old stories like when they ran at Darlington in the 60's and kept blowing tires. The fans donated their tires fo rthe race cars. Once the race was over half of the spectators' cars were up on blocks in the parking lot. lol.

flyin-lowe 03-31-2007, 07:31 PM The point of the car of tomorrow is safety and cost. With the wing in the rear and on the front the car can be adjusted so the same car can run at Bristol one week and then Daytona the next. In the past the short cars and super speedway cars were totally different. Most couldn't tell from looking but the heights were different. Now the rear wing can be raised and lowered so teams wont have to have as many cars. I am sure the big teams will still have more cars then the small teams but the smaller teams could have fewer cars.
