: The W Word In Nascar
revrnd 04-22-2007, 06:00 PM Last night after Jeff Gordon won the Phoenix race to tie him w/ Dale Sr. in the wins column, it was mentioned that he's won 4 "Cup" championships, but not a (you know what) Cup championship.
Is there a legal reason Winston can't be mentioned? Or is this just some BS from FOX? I wonder what they'd say if a driver was from Winston-Salem NC?
I was hoping when the audio went for a crap during the race, they's shut up  . I was mistaken :cussing: .
BTW, who writes Chris Myers' nonsense? As a Canuck that watches Hockey Night in Canada & roll my eyes over Ron McLean's puns, Myers' comments make me want to stick a knitting needle in my eye. "Racing Arizona" (in reference to Raising Arizona, give me a break.
I'll be glad when ESPN's coverage starts in July.
snow4mydooplz 04-22-2007, 06:40 PM This is merely just a thought, but maybe Nextel has something to do with Winston not being mentioned.. I really don't know, just trying to think of a reason.

Jack Frost 04-22-2007, 06:49 PM Yes ,there is a legal reason....Tobacco can not advertise in any sport! Don't know all the facts but that is it in a nutshell.
XCR583 04-22-2007, 09:02 PM I think it does have something to do with NEXTEL. I think NEXTEL didnt want them referring to it as being WINSTON. As soon as NEXTEL took over, I noticed the change. The announcers or drivers would start to say WINSTON but would stop and not say it or cover it up somehow.
I know you revrnd and Snow4mydooplz whatch a lot of NASCAR, what are your thoughts about the AT&T/CINGULAR sponsorship of Jeff Burton. AT&T bought out CINGULAR and wants to put AT&T on his car now but NEXTEL has an agreement that no NEW cell phone companys can sponsor any car. So AT&T cant be on the car. AT&T has filed a federal case and its to go to court the end of April I believe. Will be interesting to see what happens. Robby Gordon had something similiar with Motoralla. Then there is Kevin Harvick with sponsor ship from SHELL. He won the Daytona 500 and had a big SHELL logo on the car. SUNOCO, the official fuel of NASCAR didnt like how much publicity that SHELL got during the 500. They whined to NASCAR and NASCAR made RCR who owns Harvick's team put SMALLER SHELL logos on the car and there was something about his driving suit that had to be changed also. ITs getting ridiculous!!
Saying the WINSTON CUP on the air is not advertising at all. I dont see what that has to do with it. I think that had to do with some of the reasoning behind WINSTON not being the sponsor now and also the $$. That was the time when all the states were suing the cigarette companies and winning millions of $$s. Plus NEXTEL paid a LOT more to be the title sponsor.
doo rider 04-22-2007, 09:14 PM Yes ,there is a legal reason....Tobacco can not advertise in any sport! Don't know all the facts but that is it in a nutshell.[/b]
very possible. I know that in Montreal the F1 had that problem with the Canadian Regulations.
snow4mydooplz 04-23-2007, 05:51 AM I think Nextel is bringing more light to AT&T because of this then they wanted too.. I believe they should be allowed to put thier name on the car as it is a replacement of a wireless co sponsered car in the first place. Cingular.........hello?
Just as the drivers/announcers would accidently slip and begin to say "winston" it brought more attention to what they were not supposed to say.Or what Nextel did not want them to say.
I remember Nextel having issues with the Winston thing....Which did make me think maybe they had something to do with what everyone considers the "bad word" in commentating ect...
As far as Harvick and Shell... Why didn't Sunoco dispute the name before the Daytona Race? It's a little late after the fact. Did they just assume Harvick would not be in the spotlight all year?
Nascar is BIG business and all that implies.

Jack Frost 04-23-2007, 12:19 PM It has nothing to do with nextel! It is the same in NHRA, IHRA and ADRL to name a few ....Tabacco products cannot advertise at ANY sporting event! Notice there are no cars sponsored by tabacco products
idooski 04-23-2007, 01:39 PM It has nothing to do with nextel! It is the same in NHRA, IHRA and ADRL to name a few ....Tabacco products cannot advertise at ANY sporting event! Notice there are no cars sponsored by tabacco products [/b]
I agree with you Mike. No more smoke ads in sports.
I think that in this instance, that would most certainly be taking things too far. The name Winston Cup is a proper name for a racing series. Period. There is nothing in the name referring to cigarettes or tobacco. This is most certainly just my opinion, but the name Winston Cup alone at this point in time carries no reference to cigarettes in my mind.
This has nothing to do with it, but why not cigs when Jack, Jim, Crown Royal, and all the beers are there in front of all the kids as well?
revrnd 04-23-2007, 03:29 PM I think all this will hurt NASCAR because potential sponsors will look @ it & say we can't be bothered w/ all the bickering. They should be happy that AT&T wants to continue the sponsorship deal. When Piedmont Airlines was bought out, the new company (US Air?) dropped the sponsor deal w/ Hagan Racing.
If a Brand X beer became a national sponsor, would that prevent a brewery other than Miller, Bud or Coors from sponsoring a team?
When I was @ the NC Museum of Transportation in Spencer NC, I picked up a pamphlet for the Winston Cup Museum in Winston-Salem. I didn't check it out as it was in the wrong direction of my day's travel.
If NASCAR wants to alienate fans further, they can just keep up the crap. It seems every week during a broadcast, you'll see ads for tracks w/ tickets for sale. It used to be that the only track that advertised was Pocono.
Jack Frost 04-23-2007, 06:31 PM Nascar, NHRA, IHRA, ADRL,MLB, NHL, NBA.......it has nothing to do with the sanctioning bodys !!! !!! !!! It is the government.... it's the law, you cannot advertise tabacco products !!! !!! !!! UNDERSTAND!!!!! It has nothing to do with nextel :bash:

Feel better? Wow ! relax !
What I believe was being said or at least how I took it is this:
Winning a "winston cup" series championship does not directly advertise tobacco.
When I think of the winston cup do I automatically think.......ciggs? This was the point trying to be made and the fact that we have crown Royal, Bud and other liquor company's sponsering cars, and therefore why is that not frowned on? I dont think it should be, but why isn't it by Nascar standards?
I don't care what you say, I know what I heard with regards to Nextel almost demanding that the commentators get it right when they call the cup the "Nextel Cup" I"m used to that now but it doesn't mean I think of a cell phone when I hear it either. Nextel was adiment about this issue, and so was Nascar.
Is it the reason the commentators were so careful? I don't know, but XCR I think can varify that this was talked about on the air more than once or I probably would not have rememberd it.

revrnd 04-23-2007, 07:29 PM I can remember people up here in Canada telling me they didn't realize a cigarette company was sponsoring the series. During the broadcasts, they never mentioned the product & Winstons aren't sold up here.
The new sponsor should realize that w/o RJR sponsoring NASCAR all those years, they wouldn't have a sport to sponsor now.

Wow, Mike...I'm sorry I upset you so...I was agreeing with you. I do understand...do you? I was only pointing out that Winston Cup is not a cigarette. It was a race series.
What do they have to say if they decide to talk about Harry Gant and the #33 Skoal car? I mean it's not like they are talking about tobacco. They would be talking about a legend and his sponsor. They wouldn't even be able to quote Gant as to how he wanted to be remembered. He said “I’d like to be remembered as the driver of the #33 Skoal Bandit Racing car. That’s all.” I understand that it could be construed as being against the law to quote him on TV, but does it make sense?
NewfieBullet 04-23-2007, 08:42 PM I'll never understand how anyone can sit through a whole nascar race. Even without the commentary I'd feel like "sticking a knitting needle in my eye".
Rally racing, road racing, F-1, CART, even kids with go-carts makes for better racing then nascar.

I can respect your opinion about Nascar NB, it's not for everyone. It does have a huge fan base however. So the feelings that some people share with you are ok with Nascar as it has thousands upon thousands of fan's. Nascar like I said before is something you have look beyond cars going around in circles. It's just so much more than that, as many many people know.

SORRY  I must be misunderstanding what you were asking....I thought you were asking why Winston was no longer sponsoring the cup series.... Not why there was a problem mentioning Winston.... On that subject...It's like Comerica park, we have a friend that is high up in Comerica and has a fit when I call it Tiger stadium... Nextel paid millions for the naming rights so it their ball and if you don't do it their way they will take care of it in their own way.
I just could not undersand why I was not getting my point across :cussing: See Allison and Keith I'm now relaxed

I know it's popular, I believe it's the number 1 spectator sport in the US, though I could be wrong about that. Either way, it has a huge following, and alot of my friends watch it every week.
To me though, it is just "cars going around in circles" and the commentators seem to try and make it interesting with their inane comments like revrnd was talking about.
Oh well, I'm not a fan of any sports on tv really though I could probably sit through a hockey game if it's the playoffs, I'm in a bar with other people who are into it, and somebody hid the remote.
joezr2 04-24-2007, 12:16 PM BARGENewfie: ALMS rebroadcast on CBS Saturday. I'd check the website for specifics but since the race was actaully last weekend, I've been avoiding the sportscar sites for fear of seeing any news from it. They ran with Campcar last weekend so they may be on Sunday, not sure. Go Corvette Racing! (<-- That was my attempt at humor since there's no one left to race them anymore in GT1)
END OF BARGE We now return to your regularly scheduled 23.5 hours of NASCAR coverage.......
