This is a pretty good show, anyone seen this?(History Channel) Hauling 60 ton rigs across miles and miles of ice on a road that was made especially for them. Can you imagine being in a truck on Ice with a whiteout? w00t and trying to remain on the makeshift road?

They are headed to yellowknife and the Diamond mines http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content...p;mini_id=54692 (http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=Minisite_Video_Clips&content_type_id=54825&display_order=6&mini_id=54692)

I saw the ad for it on the weekend. Missed it last night. I've heard about the ice roads in northern Canada since I was little. I think I posted some pics a couple of years ago of a tanker that had gone thru the ice.

I remembered seeing those pics as soon as I saw what the show was about.

I saw the promo but did not get to see the show. Aren't there some lakes up north that they drive across when they freeze to save a few hundred miles? Is this what the show was about or are they building roads out ice?

i read feature about it in a weekend paper. i guess it's not too bad as long as the fellow that went before you took his time and didn't get ahead of the bow in the ice.

Perhaps you're right but, last February while riding in Gaylord it was -30 wind chill and the only issue I had with cold was my shield fogging up. This year I go to electric shield.

-30 windchill and -45 actual are way different. Imagine the windchill at -45 while riding your sled 60 mph. - brrrrrr......

then again, I wouldn't be out riding my sled in -30 windchill either - brrrrr....

Next week show is supose to have someone going thew the ice ! cant miss that one

sun night @ 10 on the history channel

For those that are watching, who's your favorite trucker? I like alex and hugh . Out of the 2 young guys Jay has my vote one tough kid ! , tj needs to go back home to mom.

Last nights show they sent a guy home for speeding on the ice , no more trucking for him ! They sure take it seriuosly, cost him big bucks and he made no bucks . TJ had a fender bender in his new truck I think there going to send him home next week too.

This show is helping me get through the summer , just seeing all that SNOW .once in a while ill grab a ice cube and hold it to my face for a bit to try to get a REAL FEEL :D .

yes the trucking part is cool but you should try building them...I spent many years in northern Manitoba building them to the first nations communities...

We have left 11 trucks on the winter road for the summer up on high ground.....the road went to &^%$ over night just like that....plus a cat...

I've even been on winter roads when it was 55 degrees out side yes on the plus side,,,I've even left cats on High ground for the summer phoned for a chopper on a sat phone to get out...it's the one thing I do miss it is a real challenge to build....we even built winter road across the tundra to Churchill....if I keep talking about this I might be going back to do it again this winter it is in my blood...and love doing it ....

I will post some pictures of them for you guys this weekend...darn I want to go build them again.....I was always the lead dog the guy on the lead dozer....

Do they just use the straight blade on the CATs? When we were sledding thru Cochrane Ontario 1 February we saw a 'dozer w/ what looked like a single furrow plow that would be used behind a horse. Only this plow was the width of the 'dozer.

Hi Rick, I just love looking at them pics. Could look at stuff like that for hours on end. Never saw the one of the trailer before.

revrnd, sounds like you're talking about a V plow. Lots of them kicking around out here yet. Not that many in use anymore though. They'll put them on the graders sometimes if the snow drifts get real deep.

Ryan

Rick K

Ryan I think nailed it sounds like a V plow to me too...

on the mighty D-6-D that has a angle blade it loses the snow into a windrow....the D-5-H the one I ran being the lead dog it has a 6 way blade...you control it right from inside the cab....you also have to have a good eye to read the lay of the land because if you can't you can get in real trouble real fast...I have a friend who went though the ice 70 feet down with the ship...he is here today to tell the story he did have a Mustang suit on...I have been off the roads for 2 years now, it is mandatory now to wear on ice...

any how here is the last time I was on the winter road it was in April 05 on the God's Lake, Oxford House Road...it was 55 degrees yes it was pushing the limits I new we might make it in but new I was not coming out the snow was gone the water was running big time.....they had 2 Trucks stuck on the other side of the mighty Hayes River witch I new had a Bridge across it now...other wise I would have said no to going...I also had a Quad with me and a Tundra as scouts looking for open creeks... it was a rush if you like living on the edge this is it....on this run I ran day and night to get into the trucks no sleep till we got them out and put on high ground..but when we did get time to sleep we stayed at a five star hotel I made the Hilton sweet

After we got the trucks on high ground we could not get them into the place they wanted to go because of open creeks we are going to try to get out so we only traveled in day light hours...sleep at night...you can see the ice rotting on the mighty Hayes River thank God for the bridge...boy how I loved doing this I can't say it enough we did not make it out in 36 hours another creek and swamp got to soft so I put it on a rock of the summer and called help chopper and in came chopper...the chopper did pick up the trucker first a day before us.....I was just thinking I have 5 weeks of Holidays I could go back and do it again or at least doing the opening of the road which I love to do.....

The ones with the bed made under the tarp and blade really tell how tired you guys were and then there is the guy by the campfire just sleeping on wood... He was probably exhausted.

It wasn't a V plow on the 'dozer. I saw the plow head on & the snow would've been pushed to 1 side.

How do you get anything done if you're taking all these pics? :p

They are running a day long Marathon of the previous shows today with the season finale to follow tonight.

I like the show but I think it would be nothing without all the theme appropriate background music, the comentator saying just the right thing, and special camera angles creating intensity. I wish they would have showed more of Hughes accident with regards to the other vehicle and what really happened. It seemed like they created this intense moment and then skipped all the details :whatever: , or maybe its just wasnt that big of deal to begin with.

I was just joking with the wife last night that it would be funny to make a television series out of any one of our jobs. I then proceeded to be the commentator and give play by play while she makes customers travel arragements :p
