I have a friend... who has a handgun handed down through a few generations but has never been registered . how does my friend go about getting it registered . there is no paperwork on the gun but its history is quite clean ? M

All it should take is a trip to his local Sheriff Dept with the unloaded handgun in a locked case/box. He'll have some paper work to fill out, and they'll run a NICS check on him and that should about cover it. Oh make sure the gun is unloaded.

And just in case I forgot to mention it, make double sure the gun is UNLOADED! :p

Calling the Sheriff first may save a trip.

It should be that easy. I received a handgun from my grandfather when he passed. They didn't give me any hassle at all! I was plesently surprised. Having my CCW may have been helpful.

a chat with my local ffl dealer today revealed that the local sheriff would be a waste of time. he said don't worry about the paper work and that it is not needed. however if he wanted to contact a ffl holder , he should be able to satisfy himself. however they usually charge 25 bucks for the paper trail. just like my first post stated the best ones  . but then again I see no need for them to know what I have to begin with.

Here in IN about 8 years ago they quit requiring used handguns to be registered. Anyone could sell to anyone and no paperwork was required. Im not sure if other states do this as well or not.
