There is going to be a new loop to the Abitibi Canyon this season.
They are going to extend the existing Island Falls trail all the way to the Fraserdale Dam.

The Red is the stretch of new trail linking the Island Falls trail to the Canyon.
The Yellow trail is the existing "A103"
The Blue trail is the existing Island Falls trail.
The Green trail is the "A" trail from SRF to Cochrane with the existing short cut from the IF trail to SRF.
This will give every one a chance to boon dock all the way up to the canyon as it follows a nice wide hydro corridor all the way up.

P.S. All D15 trails are not open at this time.

Fraz, do you have the GPS tracks for the new trail? If yes, could you post them in the GPS sub-froum?

Thanks,

Kris

I'll see what I can doo.
I know I have not had much success opening down loaded maps from the forum to my Mapsource program. I currently have a Garmin 60CS.
Last time I tried to open some of SW.com's GPS zip files was last fall and they wouldn't open correctly for some reason.
I'll try down loading your new file when it's ready and see if I can figure it out.
I don't worry about them too much as I often only use mine for back tracking later in the day.

The new trail runs rite down the power line from the canyon to the the OFSC trail we hooked up to after leaving Island falls jt. It's going to be a great trail for the big bored long tracks.

Looking @ the '08 Northern Corridor map it looks like they've done a slight reroute of TOP C. It now connects w/ TOP A EAST of Smooth Rock Falls. I wonder if this is to have sledders running from Timmins to Kap/Hearst (or vice versa) pass by the gas stations & restaurant along the hwy? W/ the paper mill closed, the businesses are probably hurting.

Talked to buddy today and he says there is about a foot on the ground in Cochrane.
Confirmed that there are tracks across Commando Lake and it's been cold. Looks like things will be great for New Years if they keep getting snow and it stays cold.

Hey JR, doo you have an up date on the conditions for us after the rain you got yesterday?
I hear the rivers have a bit of water running on them. Did the rain lift the ice and doo you think it'll be safe to ride next weekend?
Have a merry x-mas and I'll be talking to you soon.

Jan.5th
Been riding trails all week, in the evenings, while heading back to base and untill yesterday we hadn't seen more than 5 riders on the trials. Trails all week have been mint.
We saw 2 groups of 3 riders and 1 group of 2 yesterday.
We rode the "A" trail to Iroquois Falls yesterday and then rode back to the "A106 and Zeverly's loop turn off. From there we long way back to Cochrane.
Trails are getting a bit soft but there is enough base to keep things open.
The off trail is getting soft and heavy too but we've been able to go any were we want. Still getting stuck in 3 plus ft. of snow and having fun.

I've read elsewhere that there is about 11 miles of logging on the C trail south of Smooth Rock Falls. Does anyone know if the road is plowed down to gravel or is some snow being left for the sleds?

just got back from cochrane. we did find and ran the trail from the A105Q to Iroquois Falls. east of cochrane as soon as you go through the camp grounds on the trail, cross the road aprox.1000 ft. to the right is the trail. no sign except a stop sign facing towards i.f. as soon as you turn there was a i.f. sign saying 44k. trail wasn't groomed at first, but was not bad.had to run the road a ways. then we found the trail again and it was groomed. around 9miles from i.f. there was a washout on the groomed trail. 6ft. wide 5ft deep with 2ft of water running. sides are straight up and down. very hard to see coming upon it. we almost went in, but lucky we were taking it easy . ran into the o.p.p. in i.f. and they went to mark it. so if anyone runs this becareful. it's a nice ride because it connects the A105Q and the A trail for a 100 mi. loop.

Just got back from 8 days of riding around Cochrane and Gogama.

There is lots of snow up there and we were riding 3 to 4ft. on the level with drifts and ditches you could get lost in.
Buddy and I left Cochrane Sat. March 8th and rode down the "C" trail (and next to it) to Lake Mattagami about 250km.
We were told the trail south of Post 392 was ungroomed due to a broken down groomer stuck on the trail. When we got to the spot were you could clearly see were the problem occurred, the trail had fresh groomed trail and it was obvious that the groomer was back in action. We had virgin groom for about 50km. of forested trail to Tata-chika-peaka(spelling) about 15km. from our destination, were we passed the groomer heading South.
We hit the hydro lines on Sunday and had a blast playing on some great hills. The snow is a bit grainy but still has lots of body to make carving and climbing the 3 and even 4 plus feet of snow we encountered every were so far. We decided when we stop to stay on the sleds because a couple of times getting back on was like trying to get back on a sea doo.
We left Mattagami Mon. march 10th to ride back to Cochrane.
Instead of following the 'C' trail all the way back we chose to ride straight up the hydro corridor for 40km. were the "C" trail comes onto it to take us to Timmins.
Spent the rest of the day riding either great groomed trails or so off trail next to the trail. Lots of tracks next to the trail on the hydro corridors. We followed the hydro lines after the trail turned off . We were rewarded with a 15 km. stretch of corridor with only 2 blown in tracks on it. We opened up the throttles and although it was only 15km. I had a great taste of what was to be some of the best off trail riding I've had in years.

On Tues. We drove to Timmins in the morning, to look for replacement cameras because both BTR and I broke our cameras view screens riding to Mattagami on Sat.
Tues. afternoon, we rode around Zeverlys loop checking out a few pits and meadows along the way.

On Wed. we followed a hydro corridor that was trackless for about 50km. and had a great ditch running along one side 10 or 15 km. You'd hit the bottom of the ditch after launching off a drift and disappear into the bottomless depths.

Thursday we hooked up with JRs BBQ and rode some challenging off trail to say the least.
We took some local trails and ditch banged around the Silver Queen Lake area till about 2pm when JR had to head to work. Me and BTR found ourselves stuck in 4 plus feet of snow in one tight virgin bush trail. I owe ya one JR.LOL
After that we rode the A103 back from Silver Queen and

Friday we rode over to SRFs on the "A" trail and then Mapped the New section or the A103. It is as I thought it would be with long straights and a few nasty curves around beaver ponds and swamps. There is a one little spot next to the trail about halfway up to test your nerves before getting the Canyon, other wise it's flat and a nice easy ride. There was lots of snow in the canyon but most of the hills were packed or the good lines to climb were trenched beyond my level of enjoyment. IMO they need a good snow fall to fill in all the old tracks.
We rode off trail halfway back to Cochrane and had jumped on the "A103" when it started to snow real hard and wasn't safe to be off the trail. The temp was about -1 C and the flakes were big heavy ones that dropped about 6" on the trail by the time we got to the "A" trail intersection.

Sat.we rode from Cochrane to Florida ( N49 06.000 W80 50.999) and beyond. We went exploring this new to us area and were rewarded with untouched logging roads and cut lines that were fantastic and the perfect way to spend our last day riding.

Damage report for the week was 2 cameras and I ripped a few lugs and screwed my track up on something. It looks good enough for my trip, but replacement for next season was already in the summer maintenance plan.
It was common not to see the tops of fence posts and I think I might have caught one or a stump.

I'm likely headed back up next Mon. or Tues.till March,31st for my last ride of the season.
If your going to be in Cochrane and want to hook up for an off trail ride, shoot me a PM.

hello all diehard sledders.

cochrane is still good. we got hammered with snow on tuesday.

north adventure is closed but you can still get rooms. no bar no food. as far as i know all the other hotels are open.

a-trail is groomed but nothing else is, but should be ok. call bill before you go to fraserdale because he won't have gas there soon.

we will be riding and ice fishing for about 2 or 3 more weeks.

this might be one of the last local updates for this year so maybe see you soon or talk to you all next season.
