: Trail Conditions
JackPineLodge 11-08-2007, 07:04 AM Lots of work has been done this year on the trails by our club. We also pruchased a new drag. The groomers are ready to go and all signs are pointing to a "Normal" winter up here. Make sure you are ready to go early December!!!! Prediction: third week of November we will get blasted and the early riding will be great!
All the places up here need a good winter; business has been a little better than last year, but still is bad. If we have another poor winter you will see lots of places shut down! Plenty have closed already.
After deer season I will be hanging new signs at trail 41 and trail 413 at the trail to our place. They are reflective and pretty darn nice.
We did not get on any maps this year. The $400 was needed for other things. But, we are still here and still making great burgers and steaks!

JackPineLodge 11-11-2007, 08:42 AM Just got the word on a cabin that is being redone for rental: It's almost complete and will be available for rental this sledding season. I will have the pictures available very soon. It is close by and was very nice when I saw it before they started on doing the finish work. This has never been lived in!!! This will be available for the entire winter, month, week, or long weekend. There is tons of parking too. For sure it will sleep at least six in seperate beds and probably end up with more by the time they are done.
This is a chalet with a loft and once again is very nice!

JackPineLodge 11-23-2007, 08:21 PM The ground is now frozen and the small lakes are starting to freeze. Temps have been as low as 10 above with more coming. Sooooo, when the snow starts it will pile up at a rapid rate. Oh, remember my prediction of two and a half feet to come soon. Made that one along time ago. :slick: :slick: Time will tell.

JackPineLodge 11-25-2007, 10:09 AM The cold is going to continue for quite a while. Now we just have to wait for more white stuff. Snow is in the forecast, but not huge amounts yet. It only is going to take one nice storm now.

December 1. Snowing today with three to five by late tomorrow expected. All depends on the lake effect and the wind.

We are under a winter snow watch for Saturday through all day Sunday. Up to ten inches and thirty mile an hour winds. But, close to the lakes Saturday night may have some rain or freezing rain.
I would wait! Ya, we are rideable but you would have to rely on the back roads and off trail. Grand Maris was getting some nice snow, but you are limited, plus if they get the rain Saturday night, you will be done. Same with Houlton/Hancock.
The one other factor is the ride home. Could be a real mess with the wind thrown in and pulling a trailer. Last time we had winds of 60 plus!
One more week would be better use of your money, but you make the call.

We had snow almost all day yesterday and a little more last night. Real light and fluffy stuff, but we will take it all.

JackPineLodge 12-07-2007, 09:36 AM Trail 2 has an area that is not groomed because of muzzle loading going on right now. The property owners are currently using their land for hunting. That will be over a week from Monday.
The Haywire remains smooth and fast from Shingleton to Manistique.
Note; the gas station in Christmas is Closed. Thunder Lake Store is closed. Boot Lake Bar will not be pumping gas.

I tried to find the complaint about the trails, but couldn't. I really wanted to respond to exactly what was said. Our trails are in mid-season form! They are NOT CRAP!
We had people that rode Gaylord for an hour yesterday; they packed up and came up here and are loving our riding!!!!
Trail 41 is a 100 mph trail! It doesn't get any better than this!!! Trail 413 down by the swamp hasn't been cleared of fallen trees yet, but should be today. The rest of that trail is very very good! These are the two main trails in Schoolcraft County that intersect at the Jack Pine Lodge. We have 145 miles of designated trails in Schoolcraft County; plus over 3000 miles State and Federal Forrest roads to ride; not to mention the many miles of county roads that they don't plow. All are in darn good shape for riding.
There are lots of people that knock our area because they can't compete with what we have. Eg.; John Dee reported no snow here when we had three feet and excellent conditions!!!! I had asked him to put a camera here seven years ago; still don't have one!! I quit trying long ago.
Somebody is lying about our trails!!!
I am going to start a new topic and report as I know condions in our general area.

JackPineLodge 12-08-2007, 05:30 PM Correction; the Munising groomers will NOT be running until the 15th!!! The groomers that were out belong to the DNR who still groom some areas; eg. Castle Rock.
Lots of confusion over that subject; hope this clears everything up.

JackPineLodge 12-09-2007, 07:15 AM Maybe it could have been the Seeney groomers. I have heard that they took over what the DNR used to groom. One of these answers has to be right.

Everybody should have good riding all weekend since we now have probably passed the entire total for last year!!!! Not really, but the trails weren't this sharp in January or early February last year.
With the temps that are predicted for the forseeable future; Christmas week should be a great one for a change. Nothing above 27 is predicted for here with lows below zero again. Swamps are now frozen and Indian Lake has 9" of ice.

Last night we started with a little freezing rain. Then it turned to snow and has been snowing right along. Nice heavy stuff right now too. Not sure if they are going to groom it or just leave it sit since we have a couple of days of warmer temps coming.
The way they groom our trails here in Schoolcraft, and pack them; it would take quite a bit to even hurt them a little. We should have this great riding all winter.

JackPineLodge 12-21-2007, 07:33 AM Today and tomorrow are the last two days of the warm weather. We don't have any reports of any trail problems. They are holding up great. Some locals came in last night and ran the 41 80mph all the way from Manistique. No bumps!

After the rain and warm weather we have lost a lot of snow. The plowed areas were bare and the snow on the level is down to about a foot. We did get some lake effect that covered the bare spots, but just barely. I don't think our trails around here got hurt bad at all. I know off trail will be good too.
This afternoon I am going to hop on the sled and see what we have for sure and will report back then. We do have light snow in the forecast every day for the next several days. I will make some calls to see what conditions are a little farther out too.
I am going to Manistique this morning to see what is around there. Yesterday I got a call from a rider and he reported it rideable but thin spots. I'll see what he means for sure.
Camel Riders is very thin, but if you know your way around you can get places. Figure the county roads that were plowed are pretty much done. A lot of the forrest roads are still real good.
I will call Buckhorn, Bear Trap, Chattam and Crossroads and get reports from there too.

I didn't have to fire up the sled to see what I needed to know. South of here; forget it. North is fine. The forrest roads are really nice and the county roads that are unplowed are nice too. Bear Trap calls east of their rideable. Went to Munising and 8 was frozen with light snow on top. Down to Buchkhorn should be ok from the north access. 7 way south is poor. Chatam; no go. Crossroads are just icy like ours.
These conditions are nothing like they were, but riding is available. We need about 6" to get things back to where they were. South of here needs a foot.
I will be at home the next two days 906-573-2718 if anybody has questions. Don't hesitate to ask.
Reminder; if you come up here; gas up whenever you can. Lots of places don't have any gas right now.

JackPineLodge 12-27-2007, 08:09 AM They have slowed down the movement of this snow; but we will still get about the 6" they called for. It has laid down at least an inch this morning and is still snowing nicely.
Bout the time this snow is over; more is coming in from another source. Things are looking better all the time.
Then the biggie hits!!!!!
This snow is nice and wet; just what we want. It's more than an inch!

Groomers are running hard and doing a nice job keeping the trails flat and fast. They have asked to tell people that when they are on the very freshly groomed trail; don't pull hole shots; let them set up!They went from here to Shingleton and on the way back holes were already dug in from cracking that throttle from a stop. If you like great trails; use some smarts!! When this weather turns warm it will be even more important since they won't be able to groom during the heat of the day. You will just start a mess you will have to live with all day.
The groomers, during the warm up will be grooming at night so the trail will freeze smooth overnight and last a lot longer. Remember; they won't groom during the day so keep them smooth!
Riding should remain nice during this warm up since we are away from the lake and won't get as warm during the day. Lows will be in the 20's.
Please, Please, use common sense!!!!! Remind your buddies!!!!!

The weather channel has us in snow tonite/early tomorrow and it is backed by radar. Maybe, just maybe we will be out of this thing and back to sledding. It won't take a lot to fix us back up.

JackPineLodge 01-07-2008, 05:30 PM We are back to the point where we were after the last warm up. Unplowed roads and forrest roads have survived just fine. Haywire only needs a couple of inches to be good again. The base is still there and is ice. Plowed roads are bare. My front parking lot is all ice where by the cabins there is a lot of dirt and water.
We have lost a lot of snow, but will recover quickly!!!! Could have been a lot worse!!!

JackPineLodge 01-08-2008, 07:39 AM Today should be our last day above freezing. The high today will be about 33 with lows in the twenties from now on. It's a good thing our ground was frozen, otherwise we wouuld have lost a lot more snow than we did.
They are calling for a couple of inches of snow tonite, but we really need more than that to bring things back to where they belong.
Will keep you posted on the progress.

JackPineLodge 01-10-2008, 08:32 AM We got that dusting the other night and that has been all. At least the temps are back where we aren't loosing any more.
The next four days shows light snow every day from tonite on. A nice six would put us sledding again from here north. The haywire is frozen and just needs covered. Time for lots of snow dances!!!! I know it will come, just how long do we have to wait this time?

All trails have been groomed today and all trails are open including the Gulliver trail. Trail 413 has the most water in the one low area. The other trails have only spotty water that the groomers expect to be gone by morning.
Sledders report smooth trails and fast riding.

SnoCat02 01-13-2008, 02:56 AM Lake effect snow watch in effect from Sunday evening through
Monday evening...
The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a lake
effect snow watch... which is in effect from Sunday evening
through Monday Evening.
Lake effect snow showers will increase Sunday evening. Snow may
fall heavy at times Sunday night through Monday. By Monday evening...
storm total accumulations may exceed 10 inches. In addition... gusty
north winds could produce areas of blowing and drifting snow.
A lake effect snow watch means there is a potential for a large
amount of snow in localized areas. Visibilities and depth of snow can
vary greatly... impacting travel significantly. Continue to monitor
the latest forecasts.

That is a tuff one to answer; maybe a total of a foot including Fridays. Like right now it is snowing hard again and has snowed all night.
The forecast that I used for the new 8" had no lake effect in it. So maybe we are talking 18" total? On top of the foot we have.
For sure: sledding is great; traffic is low; we have more than ample snow to ride off trail now too!
See ya then!

dooman 01-13-2008, 05:11 PM sounding good  . my source tells me there is a good 20" on the ground about 5 am this morning
JackPineLodge 01-13-2008, 10:01 PM There's quite a bit; 20" isn't too far off allowing for settling.
I see they upped the ante for our lake effect to about 18" instead of a foot.

From Curtis to Marquette; from Manistique to Munising; I heard no complaints at all.
The groomers have done a great job! So has mother nature!

See you over Super Bowl weekend....

A bunch of the crew stopped in Sunday and had lunch. Brian didn't tackle the tripple! It was good to see everyone and at that point only one sled was down! Think it was an 800 that was enjoying the smooth trails too much!!! Think the tape on the throttle was just too much. The groomers have been working hard in keeping them smooth as silk. They will be able to ride anywhere and enjoy the scenery this year. Just one of the best years for good trail all around us.
Just got a weather statement; Strong south winds, 30-40, wintery mix of sleet, freezing rain, snow for Tuesday and Wednesday. Then temps fall to below zero Wednesday with lake effect snow off of Superior with blizzard conditions! Winds to exceed 50 mph! Welcome to the U P guys!!!!

Temps today hit 45!!!!!!! The top snow is greasy. About half a day of this left and then the temps drop to below 0, thank goodness!!!!!
Pulled a buddie out of a ditch today. The snow was so slippery I ended up in the ditch myself! If I hadden't had chains on both of us would have walked ten miles to get the third truck!!! It was a struggle getting me out.

We got that snow last night. At times we couldn't see the yard light 75 feet in front of our cabin. Totals: Groomer Andy, says 8", SW crew 12+. Regardless; there is plenty to ride on and Andy went out grooming this afternoon. The winds make it tuff on determining exactly how much we have. There were drifts on the trail over three feet.
People were having a ball breaking trail !!!

We have had more snow; trails are absolutely great! Temps are cold right now, but that won't last too long. You can ride anywhere from here on very nice trails. This weekend we had the VIC riders; Long Riders Relic Ride, and a Poker Run. Nobody complained about our trails and gave us nothing but compliments!!!
Next weekend should be quiet and not much traffic at all; so come on up and enjoy the riding!
We hosted the Relic Ride this year and had 175 registered relics. They ran from here to Boot Lake and back on back roads and really enjoyed the smooth riding. Think the mileage was fourty miles total. There probably were another 100 sleds that weren't registered that rode with the Long Riders, so we had quite a packed little bar all weekend!!! Think they forgot to take the sled off the pool table too!!! Humm; hope they get it today.

With our biggest snow of the year yesterday, the groomers are out working hard to get it packed down so it doesn't turn bumpy. They haven't gotten to all the trails yet, but 41 did get double groomed yesterday. This makes our great off trail riding even better for those who have paddle tracks. Lots of places to play. This has been a great winter so far. Just can't as for more!!!!

The groomers have been working real hard to get the trails back to 100% after all this snow. The deep snow makes it easy to tare up until it gets well packed and groomed several times. Sounds crazy that snow can make the trails worse, but that's what happens. I'm sure they will be 100% by the end of the day.

We had quite a bit of traffic on Friday and Saturday, plus one groomer is down. So , 41 got rougher than normal since the groomer had to also take care of 413 and our part of 7. It is out again this morning and all should be fine and what we are used to. We really didn't have any complaints, just the fact it wasn't perfect.

JackPineLodge 03-22-2008, 02:58 AM Trails are still excellent. As for off trail read on; A buddie of mine wanted to take me out to his camp and on a tour of some areas I haven't ridden. I asked him if we are talking bare roads? Nope! Asked him if these areas are rough? Nope! My little 440 and I go for the adventure. Well; dry roads. Then the roughest off trail riding I have ever seen in my life. After 45 minutes my kidneys were ready for trash can. Then the deep snow where almost everybody got stuck. Then the fallen trees. Little 440 did just fine. Kidneys got a little rest. Then on the return trip we only had a 10 minute smooth ride to the trail. RUTS 3' deep!!!!! You could just manage them. Frozen mud; dirt; then the real rough ride for 45 minutes (Well it felt like it) and finally the groomed trail at last. Got to ride the 800 Dragon 154' track home. They hoisted my broken body to the seat and pointed me in the proper direction. I squeezed the throttle and at 75 my helmet wants to come off. At least the ride was like sitting in the easy chair and it handled great. Hats off to the groomers again. Gosh; sledding can be fun.
