My Brother in-law was an electronics teach. for Sears. I remember him telling about Plasma TV. The picture is GREAT But the TV's them selves only last about 4 to 5 years. The screen starts to go out in them.

That was true on the first generation sets because the back lighting was fluorescent and not serviceable. Newer technology uses LED back lighting and has a much longer life span plus serviceability. Look at Hitachi sets, very good value. Most main stream stuff is Samsung with someone elses name on it.

The guy I talked to said LCD HD has similar picture quality but a better track record for longevity
I ended up with a rear projection because of the price. I might upgrade to a flat screen next time.

Made the move yesterday, 42"Vizio 720p LCD Flat screen HDTV . We bought it at CC they matched Sam Club price and had a online deal with a wall mount and HDMI cable. 1140.56 out the door that includes a 19.99 indoor antenna .There are 3 HD channels in my area free that look great just with the set of rabbit ears.It gets confusing :dazed: seeing all TV's side by side at the stores, each one has a great picture compared to the 1990 Zenith 27" Looking forward to watching NFL action today. There is one down side I will probably be spending less time in front of this computer monitor. :lmao:

We picked up a 42 inch LCD HD TV with 1080p at Walmart on Black Friday for $780.00. LCD is the direction TV's are headed in. I hear plasma's currently give you a better picture but you can still get glare from the screen which you do not get from an LCD.
I finally got mine mounted completely yesterday. Talk about fun having to run power and cable to the set through the attic and into the wall. Also not fun tapping into a live line to add an outlet box for the TV, that will stimulate you.

Enjoy the set. You have to adjust to these new style TV's and after a day of watching mine, "I love it."

The only thing i know is that with the plasma, if something like a dvd menu or a video game on pause gets left on all day long, the image will burn it self into the screen, i've seen it happen at walmart where they didnt push play again on one of the tv's and a partial of the menu stayed on the screen while the movie played. I don't believe the LCD's have that problem

I went with a 42" LCD TV by Olevia from Office Depot for $800. I've heard that Plasmas have a slightly better picture, but they burn out in 4 or 5 years. If you have an HD receiver from your cable or Satellite, the picture on the LCD is wonderful. But, even on regular channels, it still looks good. I'm not obsessed like some of my friends are, and they spend well over $2000 on their TVs. One friend bought a $4000 1080p Hitachi. If you don't have HD or BluRay DVDs and only have an HD receiver, I don't see the point in spending a ton of money. My TV does 720p or 1080i (which isn't as good as 1080p), but I have to say, I really can't see the difference.

Costco sels the Vizio brand, which you might want to check out.

I understand the plasmas have a burn in possiblilty that LCDs do not. Also, the LCD is brighter and better for a lighter room (windows etc.) I have a 42" Plasma (Samsung) and really love it but an LCD would have been a better choice for the room it's in due to a lot of windows and two skylights. Also I'm pretty sure the guy at Best Buy said that the plasma should last about twice as many hours as the lcd (something like 10 years) but the lcd is repairable and plasma is not. Also my plasma sometimes has a problem reproducing very dark scenes under standard dish resolutions. Does anyone have this problem with LCDs?
