We just had a 7.9 Earthquake!! It was a WHOOPER!! Knocked things off the shelves. I held the our 30gal. fish tank so it wouldn't fall over and water and 1 fish sloshed out!! It was wild! I ran over to the window and the pine trees in the front yard were whipping back and forth! The water in the mud puddles were even sloshing back and forth. I'm sure some of our Canadain neibors must have felt it. I just heard on the news it was felt in Washington and Idaho.

For a min. I thought it was my RX-1 trying to get out of the garage!!! :D

Wow ! glad your OK, 7.9 is quite a quake, hope you don't have any aftershocks or tsunami's, mother nature can be cruel at times.

Good to hear that you are OK Iron Dog. 7.9 is a monster!! All I heard was a very brief blurb on the Clinton News Network, and didn't catch the rating at that. There was also a minor quake in Northern Nebraska today, near the SD border. Now comes the aftershocks...........

OK, now what does it feel like to be in something like that?

Bartman, fortunately the epicenter was located WELL inland, a short distance southwest of Fairbanks, AK. Thankfully tsunamis will not be a problem this time around.

Heard about it on the radio this morning, only one injury reported. Glad to hear it wasn't more damaging. Did your fish survive?

CNN is reporting some oil line supports were damaged but the pipe survived.

Wolfman: It felt like 10 locomotives going past my house at the same time. It's kinda of a helpless feeling, nothing you can do. Lived here 27 yrs. and this one was by far the worst I ever felt. My daughter was crying and wife on the edge of panic. we've been getting aftershocks, but not to bad.

zrt800: The fish survived but not sure yet on what post trauma stress theropy it will need.

:D
permafrost: omotm lives alot closer the epicenter than I. (probably less than 100 miles) I'm sure he was rocking & rolling alot more than me! Hope he's OK. Not sure where AK summit lives.

Jim Fritch: The pipeline's shut down. I work there. I go back to work tomorrow and will find out more. Luckily it doesn't sound too serious and no leaks. watching the news this A.M. and there has been a lot of damage to some of our highways. Big cracks (some 20ft. deep!) have closed 3 major highways. Fortunately no one been killed.

WOW! Thank god no one was killed and you and your family(and fish)are ok! Isn't it rare to have earthquakes this time of year, or is there even a "time" for them? Not too many quakes here in ND, so I don't know squat about them. Sounds like a bad deal though! ???

No Phazerhater, unfortunately there is no earthquake season. Nor are they any closer to predicting them than they were 50yrs. ago. There can come at anytime. The 1964 quake (which registered 9.2) hit around 4:30 pm on March 28th. Our town lost 39 lives in that one. So this one could have been a lot worse. It's part of living in Alaska. I look at it this way, we don't have to worry about Hurricanes or Tornados!! :D

Has anyone heard from omotm, snow buggy or AKsummit ??

Here is something from my local paper in Steinbach, approximatly 3500km from you.

Earthquake In Alaska Affects Wells Near Steinbach

The earthquake in alaska Sunday has caused well water in southeastern Manitoba to become murky. Ryan Rempel of Friesen Drillers in Steinbach says Manitoba Water Resources officials have confirmed the link. The shock waves in Alaska were so strong they travelled along the Precambrian Shield and stirred up sediment in underground aquifers.
Rempel adds the water is fine and it is easy to remove the sediment. He says you just need to run your garden hose for a few hours. Rempel says it should not be a big problem. Rempel has received numerous calls in the past two days about the dirty well water

Everytime a train goes by my shop it is like an earthquake. The place was built on a swamp.
