Just got home from a 5 day trip to the up. I will post some pictures later but I wanted to get some info on right away.
Sat - Left home at 5am for the drive up. Weather was great with just a little snow once we got to the UP. Arrived at the Jack Pine Lodge sometime around 1. I can't say enough about Digger at the Jack Pine. He is very knowledgable about the area and the first to point out great places to stop. We rode from the Jack Pine to the Buckhorn then to the casino in Christmas (beware no gas) before gasing up in Munising and heading back to the Jack Pine for a few nightcaps.
Sun - Well Sunday is a little of a blur.....Had breakfast in Shingleton (The Timberman's skillet) it was AWESOME!! After breakfast we headed up to the Beartrap (for the first of many stops) We met a few crazy Chicagoians there, Steve and Greg, and decided to head towards Seeney. The trails were clean, smooth, and fast! After a few (hours) drinks there we met a few guys, also from Chicago, that new a county road back towards the Bear Trap. It was unbelievable! The 6 of us rode 70-80 the entire way through 8" of untouched powder. From there back to the Jack Pine for, yet again, a few more night caps.
Mon - OUCH what a headache!! Back to Shingleton for breakfast the back to the Bear Trap before heading towards Grand Marais. Again, not a bump on the trails past the Trap. BEWARE though we cam across a plow truck running straight down trail 8 they are still logging there. I suggest 88 and 888 to get in to town. We stopped at the plains and played around a bit at a place I had saved last year and had a blast. I am sure there is more snow there than there was all last year and NOONE had been there yet! What a ride! Got to the brewing company for a few warmups with some chili the gassed up and headed back to the Trap, Boot Lake (worst waitress EVER), and finally back to the Jack Pine for the Bears game (I think they lost but am not sure)!
Tues - HEALING day breakfast (guess where) back to the plains, to the old Best Western (GREAT FOOD) and back to the Jack Pine for an early night.
Wed- Left at 4:30 for the trip home
Wow, after looking back it looks like we spent a lot of time in bars! I can't say enough about Digger at the Jack Pine Lodge. If you are in the area stop in to see him! If you need a place to stay, give him a call. He was closed on Monday but let us in the bar to watch the Bears game. Normally opens at noon but let us fuel up whenever we needed. VERY GOOD GUY!! The cabins were quaint but sufficient and affordable. The trail runs right out of his back door and the groomer parks there and runs nightly. From there you can run west (trail 413 I think) towards the Buckhorn or hit the Haywire and run to Shigleton. That has been one of the best trails for atleast the last few years smooth, straight, and fast!
Sorry to keep blabbering but I had the time of my life and wanted everyone to have the chance to do the same. Oh by the way, Diggers website is www.jackpinelodges.com
Let it snow,
Shane
