I just drove from Detroit to Green bay,Wisconsin....took I-75 to 2 to 41 and I would not suggest that anyone head anywhere to sled in those cities on that route. Saturday there were plenty of bare spots along 2 !

Was there any more snow as you headed north on 41. It's very normal to see plenty of bare spots along the lakeshore on US 2. The area along the U.P's southern coast is always lower on snow.

I rarely see what I call "good snow" along 2.

There was no ridable snow the WHOLE WAY! :( Also the temp droped 35 degrees in about 4 hours today and we had white out condition all day today in Green Bay. I'll give a return report next week as we come back Thursday. We also planned on riding in Houghton/Hancock and made a few calls to some friend that live there and were told it was not so good on Friday 12/21 so we did not bring the sleds.

I would have taken them. it can snow there enough in one night to be ridable. 8-10 inches on the ground around christmas. it really took a beating with the rain.

We have some friends in Calumet and when we put a call into them and were told the conditions were fair at best, and that was Friday at 3 P.M. So that played a big part in the decision !!! Then just north of Gaylord it rained so hard I thought I was going to have to pull off the road! Having the correct information helps a great deal, we saved over $400 dollars just in gas  Wedid not see one snowmobile the whole way. :(

I've gotten two reports from areas north of US 2 that say they still have lots of ridable snow. You stayed on US 2 and then went south. Like we said, it's almost always low snow down there. Sounds to me like you guys missed an opportunity by not taking the sleds and stopping for a nite at Diggers. You saved over $400 in gas? Is fuel a lot more in the U.P? It only cost me $275 total, to get to Keweenaw and back to Kalamazoo when fuel was $2.90/gal.

It would take me 3 tanks of 20 gallons just to make it to Green Bay in the truck pulling the trailer... It took 1 tank of 14 gallons in the VW to make the same trip so that plus 46 gallons at this point and that's one way not counting the trip to the Key on the way back. So I figure that trip is 10 hours out of the way (5 hours each way) So roughly 130 gallons of gas. :dazed: Like I said we talked to a friend that owns a hotel in Calumet and took what we were told in to the decision. They have never steared us wrong, there is no reason for them to give us bad information.

my buddy in christmas is out riding. so I cannot get a report from him. his wife said they took a major hit on the snow but its ok (8-10 inches on the ground). she said the snow in the lower is probably as good or maybe better. trying to reach the guy in strongs, that got the g.t. but am not having any luck. I would have taken the sleds and traveled off 2. I have only seen it decent down there (along 2) a couple times. most of the time , people who travel there with me the first time, say " we came up here for this". go north 15-20 miles and see 20 inches more. kind of like baraga, go north to houghton and the snow is always better , much better. I have been there and seen 3 " go up to houghton and see 36". u.s. 2 is the bottom of the belt really.

I have relatives that were heading out to the west coast and driving from Detroit to Iowa they were supposed to get hammered by snow that was heading straight east.. So Mich probably won't get hit but Iowa has enough snow that three people died in it, I havent seen or heard much more but Im sure theres some there

Houghton Lake, Michigan! :whistling:[/b]
Houghton/Hancock! The picture was sent from a hotel owner(Jen sorority sister from Michigan Tech) in Calumet to us! Why is everything on here an argument now? If you want to drive up there feel free...at this point I will not post any information on here again!

I agree, your assesments have been on the money the whole way :lookaround: . We cancelled our Calumet reservations as well, the trails are ridable and flat its just that everything is a hard crusty mess.
Pesonally I didn't feel like driving all the way to Michigans boondocking mecca and not have a lick of powder to play in.

I am glad we did not listen to the drivers report from U.S. 2 . the snow was better north of there. from what I am hearing, snow at diggers is better than in the houghton area. we did ride and had good riding each and every day. you should have taken them sleds and ridden .

that is too bad if Mike does not to use the forums. if an opinion (more a statement in this case) of another is an argument, we all are in trouble . I know there are many differant than mine , just as there are many similar and like mine. it is what makes the world go-round.
