As some of you know, we had a lot of problems with Cody's sled last season resulting in 3 rebuilds on his sled.
One of the concerns was that snow or water had gotten into the motor through the air box and subsequently the carbs.
Well, not wanting to take any chances, I bought some SLP snow and water filter material and their air intake filter sleeve. I inserted the factory foam into the SLP sleeve and inserted it into the slot at the top of the side panel.
Then after having read many posts on Dootalk about people finding belt dust and crap in their air boxes and sometimes the intake horns on their carbs, we installed some SLP filter material over the drain holes at the bottom of the Doo airbox attached to the side panel. We also installed some over the tube that the side panel connects into. Just a single layer wrapped around the opening held in place with a cable tie. Thought I had all the bases covered. There was not going to be any water messing up our season.
Well, after all of the work that Simon did on his motor, and we took our time installing everything including new accessories, such as Joey's clutch kit, we had some problems when we finally had the chance to ride in some snow. The motor wouldn't reach full RPM. After trying to rule out any causes, the only one that made any sense was the clutch kit. We tried reducing the weight in the pins from 24.5 gr. to 21.5 gr. Still no go. Then returned everything in both clutches to stock parts and settings. STILL NO GO!! Talk about frustrating. Checked everything over and over.
Called upon my good friend Gerald to diagnose it.
He had it figured out in minutes.
Removed the filter material over the horn on the second air box and after that it pulled right up to the top. It wasn't getting enough air. Cody can't believe the difference that all of Simon's improvements have made to his beast. Here's a link to the details for those that are interested.

Now after I get back from Mississippi, we'll be installing the clutch kit in Cody's again. And maybe mine as well if I get a chance to ride it first. Didn't want to install it in mine until I rode it stock so that I'd have something to compare it too.
So a word to the wise, when modding, do one thing at a time.
That'll save so much time when you try to diagnose what isn't working.
Thanks Simon and Gerald, and Cody for your patience.
Wishing you many more miles this season.
Jeff
