Hey guys, new to the forum....here's my first thread. Y'all are gonna think I'm crazy but here we go.
So I was riding my '91 Indy 500 around my yard last night, when all of a sudden this sled starts throttling itself up. Not kidding around guys, this sled got to around 6000RPMs before I actually had to jump off, and send it into a tree...what the hell could have caused that crazyness to happen?
I was actually not even on the sled when it started taking off, I jumped on to steer it, then 5 seconds later we were going like 30 in my back yard!!!!!! Someone shed some light on this for me please?

Could be a few things. Your throttle cable could be too tight and when you turn it will actually open the throttle causing it to rev up on you. Could be that the carbs are so mistuned that it is not running as it should and given the right conditions it will not perform as it should. Could also be an air leak somewhere which will cause a lean condition making the engine run away with itself. check for these things and ask if you have any more questions. -Polaris Doc

Ok, I'm fairly new as far as snowmobile tech goes, could you point me in a direction that could show me how to check this stuff?

open the hood, turn the skis and see if your carbs open. do this with the sled off.

And while you have the hood open, you might also check to see if the carb covers are screwed down tight. That problem sounds like what can happen when a cover inadvertantly comes loose and it both raises the throttle valve and allows way to much air in.

Wow, I just found that the carb boot on one of the carbs is completely off the engine...could be a problem huh?
:EDIT: It wasnt off, it looked like it was, but it was just cracked that badly. Took the carbs off, cleaned them, and now I need to get some new boots, thanks for your help guys.

Those adapters are a bit pricier than one might expect, but they're worth every penny. Without them you'll run lean and hot, a sure way to burn your engine down - BTDT more than once. (That also makes it run fast and high sometimes - you're lucky you discovered it in the yard rather than at 60 mph on some God forsaken trail somewhere.)
