Well the new rev XP has fixed the legroom issue. I can't ride an original rev either due to the horrible leg room issue but the new XP has it all. Skidoo is the lightest of them all and Yamaha is the heaviest, so I guess if you want the heaviest go with Yamaha. The 4 strokes are so much heavier and more complicated it's hard for me to see the appeal. If it's really just a leg room issue go sit on them before you buy. If you think the 4 strokes actually run cleaner, try one first. The yamahas I saw running the other day were much smokier than any of my rigs.

I rode an 04 Warrior for 2 1/2 years. Once you set it up the weight is not an issue on the trails unless you get stuck or are trying to load it or something. With reverse and the long track this should not be a problem. Just riding I didn't notice the weight at all. There are pros and cons to both types. I can say that riding on the 4 stroke I could actually smell the two strokes when they were in front of me. I couldn't before because I smelled just like they did. Its kinda like when I quit smoking, you don't realize what you smell like as a smoker until you quit. My wife even noticed when I would come back from riding that my clothes did not stink nothing like they used to.
What kind of riding are you talking about? If you want to cruise around on groomed trails you will be fine. Mine was a long track with 1 1/2 lugs so it did just fine in the deep stuff even with the extra weight. You will notice the difference in ride if you get into moguls and some rough trails, the Rev is great in that. The best thing to do is find someone on one and take a test ride in the conditions you generally ride in. You will likely know within a short period of time if you are going to join the 4 stroke crowd. I don't know first hand on what mileage the SDI's get but my bro-in-law has a 600 HO (04) and I would average about 20- 25% better on the gas mileage then he did riding the same conditions. After a stop if it took him $20 bucks to top off is tank I could usually fill up for close to $15.

The weight of the Yamaha's won't be noticable unless unless you're playing in the powder off trail, or in the moguls.

Two-stroke smell is obvious, and that's how I tell when I'm coming up behind other sledders, I smell them, then see snow dust, and then see the riders.

That said, Yamaha's are like the Honda's of snowmobiling. Nice, well built, but over rated and over priced.

I had a Vector nice machine, Now I'm on the new Rev XP. I couldn't ride the old Revs bad knees, but loved the ride. With the new XP lots of leg room, and what a ride.People say you can't feel the wait of Yammi get one stuck or ride 150 miles of rough trail and you will.

I would test ride a few off them I'm riding a 08 Nytro rtx and boy it eats the bumps up I have never ridden anything like this before. I think the leg room might be a problem on the Nytro (maybe). The other thing I find if the Nytro is it is hard to keep the front end down it has torque. The RX1 had the leg room....this is just my opinion though.

I sure hope he finds the right ride though...test ride them is the best way to find what fits yourself....good luck

A 4 stroke shouldn't smoke at all, other than the same type of exhaust you get out of your car.

Yamaha's are heavy..... well.... we'll say 4 stroke engines are heavy period.
Skidoo mxzx 800 425 lbs.
Yamaha Apex LTX 577 lbs.

Personally, I'm brand loyal. However, I'd still buy a Doo if I was looking for a nice, cost efficient powder riding sled. Trail riding, I'd buy a Yamaha.... but that's just because I'm brand loyal and believe that Yamaha is the more reliable machine. BUT..... for powder and playing on the hills, the extra 150 lbs really is a serious downfall.

Your stepdad is leaving a good machine, but I think he will appreciate the fit and finish of a Yamaha ..Yes Yamaha are heavier because of there four stroke motors but once set up you won't feel the difference in the trails even a bit of powder or slush...Any machine is heavy when stuck, I am yet to hear a person trying to get a sled unstuck say wow this sled is so light ..All depends on his riding style if he rides trails and a bit of powder or ice fishes go 4 stroke if you want something to Boon Dock with go with the Rev or XP ......

What planet are you on? I'm a ski-doo and polaris mechanic, and i own a 07 phazer and 08 nytro rtx. fst's are the heaviest! All sleds have good and bad things about them. Bottom line the newer yamaha's are better quality, will last longer, and have a higher re-sale value, plus no two stroke smell.
