: Better Map
ravine rat 12-29-2007, 07:17 PM Didn't the OFSC have a better online map then the one they have up now. The one I tried to look at tongiht doesn't show the lakes and stuff. I don't have a hard copy this year but will get one when I find it. Sort of Minden up to Dorset area. When I pulled out the tons of maps I have I only had a 2003 map. I thought two years ago on some trip planner the maps were more detailed.

Canadoo 12-31-2007, 10:34 AM there is an excellent map on the tall pines site. http://www.tallpines.org/trailmap.htm
the msr map is good too.
do yourself a favor and save the tallpines map to your computer before they take it off permanently as the ofsc is doing gps mapping and all these club maps are going by the wayside. I find they have better representation, although the distances are wrong.
ravine rat 12-31-2007, 04:35 PM Thanks Canadoo that's pretty much what I was looking for. The hard copy I had was from 2003 and we know how trails change routes all the time.

I got a email from someone @ the OFSC wondering where I got my mileage info. I told him the confirmed mileages were from my trips. He was checking some of the mileages on maps. I've compared my info to some of the mileage charts on the maps & the maps had either estimated really low (probably as the crow flies) or used really indirect routes between 2 places to come up w/ the mileages they showed.
ravine rat 01-01-2008, 03:50 PM As you know nothing better than gathering the info first hand. I'v eused some of your milages for Northern Ont. Got to know if your going to make it between gas stations.

no probs. I love that map! HOWEVER. they haven't updated it in a few years...
the only thing I can see that should be noted about the TPSC map is the trail 66 from 65 to 67 (dagger lake trail and tall pines trail) is CLOSED and has been for a few years. it is not on the MSR map for that reason. compare the 2 and you will know what I'm talking about. I believe the old clubhouse was on that trail and its pretty gnarly. the only reason I have been given for its closure is its too narrow for the new groomers... go up that way and do the crown lake loop.. nearly 2000feet above sea level in that area.. amazing trail

oh man, I checked a few maps and are they ever off in their mileage... I'll try to find one from district 6... I recall something like 200kms from whitney to North bay.. you're right on: as the crow flies!! lol
have used your mileage chart in the past as well!

A couple of years ago, the OFSC had an online map that you could zoom in and out, include lakes and rivers, rail lines, towns, etc. which I thought was awesome. I use to print off these maps and tape them together and laminate them into a larger map. For some reason they discontinued it and replaced it with a lame @$$ one now.
ravine rat 01-02-2008, 06:25 PM I could remeber zooming in on the maps and gettting more detail. I have Topo's but of course the trails aren't on them. I had to cancel my run into the dorset area today then pulled a muscle in my neck. Guess this should give me time to hunt down a printed copy. I have saved the above map to my puter.
Thanks guys

ravine rat 01-07-2008, 06:16 PM I picked up a hard copy of the map today. Got a few of the surronding area as well.

Canadoo 01-08-2008, 12:42 PM a hard copy of the tall pines map? where abouts? haven't seen them in years!!
ravine rat 01-10-2008, 05:42 PM The map(s) I got are the Hill & Gully Riders and the Snow Crest Riders. Both seem to cover the area. The HGR have Topography on th emap. No contour lines but shows changes in Elevation. Did the Crown Lake loop used to split Wolf lk and Crown Lake. Those are the lakes I wanted to get into for some fishing. I picked the maps up at the Tourist place in Barrie

Canadoo 01-11-2008, 01:58 PM you can still do the loop around crown and wolf lakes. its the 66 trail south of there that is closed - labelled (tall pines trail & dagger lake trail on the Tall pines map). compare the tall pines map to the msr - the msr doesn't have this one on it.
do the loop up to crown lake its amazing!
ravine rat 01-11-2008, 06:54 PM Once we get the snow back I'll head up and do the loop. Do you you know if they lost all there ice like we did?
RR
Canadoo 01-14-2008, 11:30 AM trails are pooched. once they get grooming up there its good to go. its the highest point in the area - about 1600feet above sea level so they get colder air and more snow than even dorset or huntsville. have to get there though..
I predict those trails will be ready for next weekend.. but not this one coming up unless we get a real dump of 12" or more.
EDIT: got a few inches up that way today. with at least a bit more to come!!!
ravine rat 01-20-2008, 12:20 PM Well the area has gotten a good dump of snow. We took the unmaintained road which I guess part of it is trail 66. ( don't have the map here right now). Lots of snow but they need to get a good base for the snow to hold. Kind of slippery in spots. We went to Wolf and Crown Lake. 12" of ice. Let's hope the trails improve so we can put some miles on. There is lots of snow up there though.
