: Uh Oh, Help!
citation-83 01-07-2008, 02:40 PM ok so yesterday i figured i would go out for one last short ride around my cottage before we packed up and went home. well it started out fine i went riding where i usually do when by myself not to far from the cottage, probably about 10-15 kilometers away. i go down some of the trails down to the lake to go for a short ride into the bay and back, i get on the lake, ride to the end of the bay, stop for a minute then go again. im heading home on the lake doing about 80 or so and i hear my sled making this weird noise, so i slow down, as i slow down it starts squeeling, i didnt like that so i stop, my engine didnt like it either and made some awful noises and died. i get off of it to try and start it again and the pull cord wont move. i open up the hood and check my belt, its fine, as i have my hood open in the middle of the bay a guy on a formula three with this d&d can on it ( sounded so friggen nice) stops and asks if theres a problem, i say yea she just stopped dead. i go back over to try and start it, it starts but sounds like absolute s$&% and is back firing. so we pull the plugs and put in the spares and it still sounds awful. the guy that stopped for me gave me a tow to land and i phoned my cottage and my grandpa and dad came and towed me home. we get it home and it wont start, we checked for spark, both had spark, when we got it running the plugs were wet. while its running we pull a cap off one plug at a time, first one we pulled it and it died, so the other side must be screwed, we fire it back up and pull the other one and it keeps running like crap so that one must have a problem. as soon as we get to a higher rpm the #*&%%@ noises and back firing stops and sounds normal. ok this reminded us of my dads sled when it would keep breaking the main jet needle cause the carb had worn and the piece in side that moves up and down for the throttle was loose so it would work the needle enough that it would snap and he had to buy a whole new carb ($300) we are also not sure if those plugs were gapped properly or we just put them in there for back up.
i just wanted to go for one last rip for january since the snow is melting. be careful what you wish for!
i really wish i had some cash on me and i would have gave the guy that towed me like 20 bucks so he could fill up his machine or something, it was really nice of him to do for a complete stranger, i guess all sledders know each other, they all know what its about.
steve6 01-07-2008, 02:48 PM internal engine damage.
Sounds like it ate a crank bearing or piston. The squeeling definitely points to a dried out crank bearing if you ask me.
versatileman 01-07-2008, 02:50 PM Uh oh, sounds like you may have seized it. once in cooled back down the engine pulled over again.
Get a compression gauge out and check psi.
Not sure, but that is what it sounds like.
citation-83 01-07-2008, 03:08 PM how long does it usually take for it to cool down enough that the pull cord will come out again, cause it was only a minute tops, atleast
snofrog 01-07-2008, 03:37 PM what was the snow condition/ quantity when this happend ?
citation-83 01-07-2008, 04:03 PM there was good snow on land, but the lake only had snow patches, and slush patches, and there was puddles on top of the ice. this happened after i stopped to let it cool down on shore, then i went to go home and one minute later it happened. when it died and i was checking things out, i checked in the tunnel and it was just packed full of snow and slush, there was only enough room for the track to turn in there.
98_XC 01-07-2008, 05:07 PM It definitely sounds like a piston - a compression check will easily tell.
Out of curiousity, where abouts are you sledding (it says Georgian Bay in your profile). Ice was still good from the terrible weekend?
citation-83 01-07-2008, 05:13 PM penetang bay, honey harbour. broke down in penetang bay. ice was great saturday but sunday was sloppy.
ravine rat 01-07-2008, 05:24 PM Sounds likea piston to me too. Had same thing happen with my old 86 safari. Didn't store it properly one year. High seed jet pluged so not getting any lubrication in the cylinder away from fan. It cooled down and would run a short period till it finally seized. For me it almost made a pop sound before it would shut down.

citation-83 01-07-2008, 07:36 PM what should the normal compression be for my sled?
citation-83 01-08-2008, 02:03 PM anyone?
snofrog 01-08-2008, 03:38 PM it really depends on the tester you are using numbers from 120-150 wouldnt be uncommon the key is to have your numbers close to each other say within 7% of each other ... so I`ve got to ask , what are your numbers ?
citation-83 01-08-2008, 06:16 PM wont know untill the weekend, my sleds at my cottage, leave it there all year, better riding.
probably going to be bad. sounds like i have some work on my hands
snofrog 01-08-2008, 07:41 PM imho...(not being there ) I would bet no oil rather than a overheat unless you had an ice bridge accross your heat exchanger not letting snow/slush whatever contact the heat exchanger
citation-83 01-08-2008, 08:50 PM yea tunnel looked like it was full of slush and snow but didnt dig it out to see if there was anything else in there. i topped up on oil the day before but maybe there was a pinch in the line. ill have to see what happened on the weekend.
snofrog 01-08-2008, 09:02 PM yea tunnel looked like it was full of slush and snow but didnt dig it out to see if there was anything else in there. i topped up on oil the day before but maybe there was a pinch in the line. ill have to see what happened on the weekend.[/b]
is the oil level lower then when you filled it up ?
boss hoss 01-08-2008, 09:06 PM CLASSIC PISTON REPLACEMENT.
TOO MUCH DRAG FROM THE LOWER END TRANSFERING BACK TO THE COMPRESSION OF THE ENGINE.
BEEN THERE DONE THAT LEARNED THE HARD WAY TO STAY OFF THE SLUSH!!
YOU PROBABLY HAVE A HOLE IN THE PISTON THE SIZE OF A DIME-USD.
permafrost 01-08-2008, 09:18 PM The 99 600 was the first year for the new twin motors and the ZX chassis, they were notorious for blowing crank seals. There is an updated seal available that fixes the problem. My buddies went through three crank seals before it was finally fixed right. you can check behind your primary clutch for signs of oil leakage.
I hope this helps

billww 01-08-2008, 09:27 PM Look at the plug see if there looks like metal in the bottoms if so it,s the rings.
citation-83 01-09-2008, 03:16 PM is the oil level lower then when you filled it up ?[/b]
couldnt tell you that, didnt look cause i knew i filled it up the day b4, but ill tell you on the weekend. the only fluid i checked was gas and my coolant.
like i said, i dont have my sled here and didnt go into close inspection because it was time to go home. this weekend we will be doing a compression test and checking for things that could have possibly happened.
ive put on approx. 2000 kms since i got it last year and have not touched the motor. it now has almost 6000 kms.
citation-83 01-13-2008, 06:23 PM did a compression test yesterday, 0 on the exhaust side and 90 on clutch side. blew a ring in the oneside with no compression. its getting rebuilt this week, the guy doesnt think anything happened to my crank.
guy thats fixing it for me is going to try to get me a used temp. gauge.
BigPoppa05 01-13-2008, 09:40 PM you blew it up, if it is back firing at idle, only one piston is firing and the other part of the time. Pull your pipes off and look down the clyinders where u pull your y pipe off and check your pistons from there.
citation-83 01-14-2008, 03:04 PM you blew it up, if it is back firing at idle, only one piston is firing and the other part of the time. Pull your pipes off and look down the clyinders where u pull your y pipe off and check your pistons from there.[/b]
lol i just said that, i blew a ring in the one side.

it sounded better didn't it....lol Sorry to hear about this, hopefully your back up and running soon.

the guy thats rebuilding it for me just lives a few houses down from my cottage and said he might have it done for next weekend, if not early next week. he works on sleds for a couple hours after work, and all he has to do is tear it down, see what he needs to get to get it running right again, order the parts put them in then ride it for the first 10-15 kms. its all good, we dont have any real riding snow so theres no rush.
