Hey everyone. I have a 96 FIII 600. Love it. Poor girl sat for 6 years, so I finally got it back. I pulled the motor. Seen a few scuffs in the sleaves, nothing too deep. nNo bad sounds from or signs of rust in it. water pump still turned. Carbs were shot. Got new carbs from a 97 or 98 700 triple. so they are 38 mm's instead of 36. Put the fatter jets out of my 36's in it (330-320-330 I belive). Got it all back together. Compression is 120 all the way across (6600 KM's) One thing too note is the oil pump lever lines are aligned, but the lever had some wear so I tightened it on the richer side. Finally got it running (with about 100:1 premix as well) and it smokes like crazy. more white in colour. bogs and wont run on all 3 cylinders consitently. I find you have too put the choke on half and give it a snap to get it too rev. Then it will rev fine for a bit till it backfires or bogs down. any ideas?

White smoke could be antifreeze, does it smell kinda sweet? One thing I would change before running a motor that has been sitting that long is crank seals. When a motor isn't run for a long period of time they dry out and crack.

I wondered that too, but it doesn't appear to be going down any? I haven't tried pressurizing the system yet, but I plan on it....

It is lean. You can spray carb cleaner around the crank seals why it is running. If the idle smooths out, you have a bad seal. Also look at the carb boots to make sure that there is no leaks. Are you running it with the air box off? If so, that would make it lean too. I think you would need the box for the larger carbs.

And welcome to the best site on the net!!!

so it might be lean? I was thinking about installing the smaller jets and seeing how it worked then? I have had every different answer you can imagine but not much time too tinker yet. Well thanks for the info if I ever get a day off I plan on farting around with it so I will take all this info and give it all a try. I just want too get this Ba$tard ripping again so I can start the "real" tinkering. I was running it without the boxes. I haven't got a good burn onto the plugs yet but when i checked them last time they looked a little dark too me. But seems like the choke is what makes it run best which would make you think it is lean. I dont know, almost seems too have conflicting issues? probably more than one thing wrong.

If you can flip the choke up and it runs better....lean.
