: Advice On The 95 Indy Xlt 600 , New To The Sport
scarybenzo 01-20-2008, 01:09 PM Hello all . I'm new to this forum and sport . I've had many types of atv's and dirtbikes in the past but never owned a sled . Now for my question . My gf purchased a 1995 polaris indy xlt 600 off her brother as a gift to me . I already know about the crankshaft issues with the 96/97 xlt's after using the search function on this forum . Here are some of my ?'s . Thankyou in advance for the help. :)
I dont know much about sleds so what should I look for as far as problems ?
Is there a way to add reverse to it ?
Should I run premix instead of relying on the oil injection, if so what ratio ?
What premix oil is best ?
How should this model ( xlt 600 ) perform , speed, power , suspension ?
Is there a way I can tell what suspension I have , 8inch/extra 10 /extra 12 ?
Any known factory defects ?
How will the power compare to riding a piped banshee or a cr 250 ?
I know its alot of questions but as you can see I'm new to the sport . I appreciate any help and am yet to pick the sled up as its in maine and I live in ct . I'll be riding it on the KI trails in Brownville junction ME were my gf is from and will be keeping it at her folks house there since CT has no places to ride or snow :( .
steve6 01-20-2008, 01:55 PM Use the oil injection, thats what it is there for, I have no seen any real issues on these sleds with it. As for actual oil... I just buy cheap, motomaster branded stuff(from canadian tire)..It really shouldn't matter as long as its for 2 stroke snowmobile injection engines.
There is reverse available... It wouldn't be cheap to add. Check ebay.
I have this sled and its been a great trail sled...It has decent get up and go, will do 70+ nicely cruising, I do not expect it to be the fastest out there, as I want reliablilty. If it has extra 10/12 it should have a decal on the back of the sled.
As for pure power? It will eat up those atv/dirt bike you listed without issue. This machine should do 85+ mph, and it will get there fast.
Good luck....
scarybenzo 01-20-2008, 02:57 PM Thankyou for the quick reply . I asked about the power because I have only riden a old 440cc air cooled sled before . Since then I havent gottan to go sledding much do to living in ct ,not much snow here.

mvvette97 01-25-2008, 01:23 AM how many miles do ya have on it? My 95 has 4100 and the crank went bad. It's torn down right now as we speak. The 93-94 XLT 580 is the one that didn't have any crank problems. 95 and up do I found out. I'm having a guy rebuild my crank and he seems to think that 300 bucks will cover it. The oil hole on the clutch side for the bearing is way smaller than the rest, they say that is why the bearing goes bad on these sleds. It's a great sled though. Get a DG can for it, you will love it. :hallo1:
scarybenzo 01-27-2008, 08:08 AM It has just under 4000 mile on it ( 3884 ) my gf paid 600$ for it so is that still a good deal ?
Btw it says special on the hood , does that mean something other than suspension , ie extra 12 ?
Here are some pics she sent me .

scarybenzo 02-11-2008, 05:46 PM Well I finally got to ride it for a bit on K.I. trails through brownville ME over the weekend . A couple of things I noticed . It seems to be running real rich and doesnt want to idle for too long without loading up and stalling out . If I stop and then go to take off it bogs down a little then clears up and runs fine , although a bit weeker then I thought it should be . It wont pick up the ski's when pegged . Also on a long straight I had it pinned and it would only rev to 7000rpm but then it would clear its throat and take off as it hit 7500rpm to 8000 . I think I may have a jetting problem . Also the belt may be worn as well because it sits a little below the secondary clutch pully . I did put in new plugs and did a reading , = black oily and wet so I think way to rich . Also the speedometer doesnt work , what can cause this ? Help appreciated ,thanks in advance .

I think this weekend when I have the time I'll take apart the carbs and give them a cleaning . I'm also going to change the belt and clean the clutches while i'm at it . I have new plugs already but I havent gapped them yet . What should I set them at ?

Be sure to check the clutch out, the rollers may be stuck or have flat spots. I'd say just clean the carbs, replace the belt and then put some miles on it. If it still bogs take a better look at the clutch. Make sure to take notice as to what size main jets are in the carbs and also what notch the needles are set at.
scarybenzo 02-19-2008, 06:48 PM Well I found out why its running pretty rough . The carbs were pretty filthy . Lots of brown coating = old nasty gas . On top off that it was flooding in the middle carb due to the floats being stuck and it filling with fuel . I also dropped the needles down one clip mark from stock and slightly raised the idle on each carb . It now runs much much better . It will idle for ever and doesnt flood anymore . I might have to wait quite a while for snow to ring it out though , in CT . Anyway I'm still going to go through the clutches and check for worn out parts or stuff to clean . Anything I should look for in reguards to the clutches ?

I also have a 95 xlt special, 11,000 miles no major problems. one raeson why the spedo doesnt work could be the bearing on the track under the driven clutch is going. remove spedo drive at bearing a check to see if the small drive shaft is broken, it is the bearing may be on the way out. I have replace 4 so far
crazy1 02-23-2008, 08:12 PM my 95 polaris indy xlt 600 topped out at 107 mph on ice packed dirt road upwards of 90+ in 6 inches nice powder. however i found this forum in hopes of finding repair tips. 4300 miles and crank siezed up. still in dissasembly process to see the damage. Now I bought this sled from 2nd owner. did first owner do anything to it to make it run faster than stock? maybe, I don't really know. it had stock exhaust

I disagree with that statement. Use good oil not the cheapest you can find. Its cheap for reason, plus it's what keeps your engine from burnign down. I would not go cheap on the oil.
steepndeeper 02-27-2008, 10:08 PM Speedo problem: 1) check to make sure that both ends of the cable are connected, one to speedo in the dash pod and the other one the angle gear on the drive shaft (left hand side of machine below driven clutch). 2) If that is ok then pull you speedometer angle gear off and check to make sure that small speedo key from drive shaft to angle gear is not broken. If it is quite often the bearing on the drive shaft is shot and should be replaced. 3) If that checks out then check the cable from angle gear to speedo to make sure that it is not broken.

My 94.5 XLT "prototype suspension" has over 9500 miles. I use ONLY Polaris oil. I use it in my chain saws too. I never had a motor blow due to an oil related problem.

I have 9500 miles on my 94.5 XLT and love it. For the best performance be sure to have your FOX shocks rebuilt every few years. You will notice a differance! Like one other member said, you will find the speedo problem under the driven clutch. I could talk all day about this sled but please remember not to have your track to tight. Your slides will heat up and stick. A tight track and stock clutching will keep your sled slow. The number of ice studs greatly affects your speed. I hope I can be some help to you
