92 Prowler 440 LC, Its a new edition and after learning a few things from the manual I looked over the clutch, not so good !

What do you think, It needs to be reworked in my humble opinion! Does the spider look trashed or will a standard rebuild kit sufficant ? I need some suggestions for springs and weights and so on? I want alot of low end for powder and hills. It runs at 10,000' so maybe the "High altitude" weights ?

I do not know about that stuff, but I do know that you should defiantly not ride that until you have it fixed

The third pic does call the condition of the spider into question. The first pic makes me wonder if the main shaft and sheave would still be useful either. It looks like the outer cover bearing is eating the shaft. That bearing is, at least, overdue for replacement. I know many guys don't lube their clutches. I've been lubing since Polaris recommended it and sold an oil for that purpose. Normally I use a dry lube: Comet moly these days.
Take it off and look it over well (with the cover plate off and spring tension removed.) It is likely that buying new will be cheaper and better than rebuilding if you start getting into major parts.

BTW, your links work good. However, if you want to post directly, simply put [ img] before and [/img ] right after the URL and it'll post directly. (I added a space inside the square brackets in order to make them visible. You don't want to do that when using them with a link.)

My 550's clutch looked identical when I got the sled. I took the clutch down to the local sled shop for an estimate, this is what I was told

Maching cost $200
Parts $150

For a total of $350

Used clutch that was rebuilt and waited for my sled, $200.

All the bushings are casted in, so they have to be machined out. then new custome ones need to be made.

For just alittle more than repair cost I could of bought a new Commet. But then you have to buy the weights and spring.

I hope this hepls

It looks like it was dying to be serviced a thousand miles or more ago, now its pretty cooked.
If it was my sled, I would put it up until the clutch is fixed. You run to big a risk of having parts of the clutch come apart and causing damage or the sled over revving and causing engine damage.

It will most likely need a spider (rollers and pins at minimum), spider buttons and a movable sheath bushing (if the shaft is not damaged) and probably weights, pins and bushings.

You are at the point where it my be more economical to find a new or good used comet 6 bolt clutch. The cost of a spider and the tools (or shop labor) to remove and install it (they are impossible to remove without the right tools and fixtures) will probably out weigh the cost of a replacement clutch.

You can probably find a good blank comet clutch and put new weights and pins in it (maybe a new spring too) for under $250.00

Ah, snowmobiles - maintenance, maintenance, maintenance.

the spider "could" be most likely reused but it will be out of balance. you WILL need springs weights pins spider kit ,more than likely the bushing in the end cover and the moveable sheave. personally i would either go buy a new comet or jump on ebay and you can find a good used clutch or a new one . it does not have to be a six tower either you can run a nine tower on it as well (newer style). that thing must be a real turd to ride.

When mine went I was on the face of a summit climb 11,ooo ft and the clutch locked in the engaged position.

we had to lift the track off the ground to start my sled then do a running jump on it and make the run for home, anytime I had to stop, it would kill the sled and we would have to repeat the steps to get going again. Over 20 miles out that sucks! Get it fixed then go have fun.

New 9 towers that you use your old springs are about $250-300. If your buying a new clutch, spend the extra and get new springs.
