I just purchased this, my first Yamaha. It is in decent shape but 5500 miles on it. Being new to Yamaha, is there anything I should know, be sure to check, or have maintained? I am skeptical the previous owner did anything besides drive it.
I know enough to clean clutches, align the track, spark plugs and that type of stuff.
It does not have electric start or reverse.
Thanks for any advice you may have.

Well, Just make sure you put 93 octane in that baby, its a 3 cyl with one pipe right? 3 into 1 exhaust manifold? just make sure the carbs are cleaned because if worst comes to worst the main jet could be stuck open, causing the engine to lean out (engine melt down) also just make sure you keep your oil full, just to be sure you don't run out on the trail....... make sure your track has proper tension

hope that helps

Ya man, sounds pretty much like any other machine so far. Just wondering about anything in particular about this machine. Going to take it for my first ride tomorrow, bunch of us are going about 200 miles

I agree with Yamidude 59. Use 93 octane and make sure the carbs are clean. To me, there is a VERY noticable difference with my 700 if the carbs get dirty. Other than that I think you will be very pleased.

So how was the ride?????

I had problems in real cold weather with my srx, and i took it too the dealer and they went through the carbs and they said they weren't too dirty but those engines are real sensitive to dirty carbs, got em cleaned, idled a ton better and it was more torqy. make sure when you get your chain case oil changed that you do it in the fall because if you do it in the spring, condensation will build up in the chain case which isn't good..... other then that its pretty much like any other sled maintence wise, we just have a nice high performance 3 cylinder brute

160 miles across rough lake, smooth deep ditches, ungroomed trails and some real nice river riding. I am extremely happy with this machine. Bought a little more gas than the rest of the guys, but I probably had the throttle squeezed a little tighter than them because I dont like to follow : )
Top end was 105mph on hard pack (according to the speedo). My track is in rough shape and I have a line on a 1.25 track I most likely will install. If this machine had less miles on it I would long track it, not sure how long I can abuse this machine before it explodes.
Does anyone have a high miler Yamaha triple? Are these engines bullet proof? I had a Formula 3 that let me down after 2500 miles. How accurate is the tachometer and what is the redline?
I have always been a Bombardier man but now I am not so sure anymore. :lookaround:

Unless you don't maintain that motor, the motor won't blow they are great motors, I have seen tons of Yamaha tripple very high milers, and yes eventually they have to be rebuilt ...........

The tach is pretty damn accurate i'd have to say.... its hard to say what the redline is.... the numbers go up to 10,000 rpm on my tach....i've been there before when i'm doin 100 (indicated) i'm sure theses sleds will do 115-120 conditions permitting..... you topped it out at 105? thats it?

I am afraid so. I think the clutch needs adjusting, cleaning or different weights or something because I had lots of throttle left but no more power. I also believe 9500 rpm is too high.

is this the srx or just the sx? obviously the srx is going to be faster... and the Rpms might be different.

Very reliable machines. I have always maintained mine religiously. Summerize it properly and clean the carbs every year. I change the chaincase oil every year with synthetic and pull the chaincase cover off to clean it good and inspect the gears and chain. I clean the power valves every 2000 miles or so. I always use amsoil synthetic oil in the engine. The clutches are also cleaned every year. I also hand wash it after every trip and lube the chassis and inspect for possible problems. This may seem like a lot of work but the sled still looks new and it has 15000 kms on it and I have never had to turn a wrench on it other than maintenance. Including washing, it probably works out to about 15 hrs a year of maintenance for about 150 hrs of riding. As far as gas mileage goes, I get 14-16 mpg. That includes a lot of WOT lake running and aggressive trail riding. It gets the worst mileage in warm weather. I think they are jetted for -20 or -30 celsius, so they get betteras it gets colder.

i too also maintain my srx real well, (religiously)..... But Homer, if your srx is getting 14-16 mpg, then you must not have an srx, 10-12 at best for any srx. i'm allergic to B.s. sry.

First, nowhere do I say I am talking about an SRX ( Why would I ? The guy who started this thread bought a Viper!). Second, if you look at what sled I own you will see it is a Viper. Third, you will also see that I am from Canada which means imperial gallons which are about 20% larger than a US gallon. Maybe you should think a little before you acuse someone of B.S.

sorry about that man.... they are practically the same....don't know much about canada but i overlooked the fact that your system of measure is diferent, but why can't everyone use the same system of measure.... an sx viper 700 is a high performance machine.... i don't expect it to get great mpg...

The srx gets better gas milage than a SX or SXV and uses less oil aswell.

TOPIC :At or 5000 miles I would replace all the bearings in the drive line and the buttons on the secondery and both clutch springs. Clean the power valves but dont use sand paper just some cleaner and a rag. If it doesnt have it I would install the SRX rear heat exchanger for when you have low or frozen snow conditions.

Great sled , for some the suspenion was stiff but if you drive hard it was just right in my opion.
