I just picked up a used polaris 600 with 400 miles on it. Since the sled did not come with an owners manual I was wondering what is the difference between the premiun and regular indicators on the ignition switch. Also with a base elevation of 6000 ft what size lets should I be running in the motor? Any help would be great.

:D First congrats on your new sled. I have had my 2001 600 xc sp for about a week now and I'm thrilled with it.

The motor is designed to work best with premium fuel 91 octane or better.
When running premium set the key to the premium position and a dash light will confirm that it's in that mode.

If you have to run on regular (i.e. filling at a small gas stn while out on the trails), or if you are unsure of the quality of gas in the tank (mebbe a bit older or stale fuel) you can use the regular setting on the key. Putting the sled in regular mode will adjust the timing on the motor slightly.

In most of my riding I've had premium gas in the sled and haven't noticed a huge difference in performance between the two settings.

From what I understand the premium will burn cleaner, but requires a bit more time in the cylinder to burn fully so hence the need for the timing change.

In my mind for the extra few dollars per tank, burning premium is just a bit of piece of mind that I'm giving that engine the best fuel, and hope to improve reliability by doing so.
Sorry, I'm not familiar with the jets, someone else should chime in with some help.

Thanks for the info. BY any chance does your owners manual state how much fluid goes in the gear case. I would like to change the oil.
