Well, my bud stops by the other day and asks me if i want to buy a sled from him. A 90-something indy 700 triple in great shape for $300.00. He needed the money by tues. morning, so i told him i would try to get it. Went to pick it up tonight and it sold last noght around 9pm :cussing: If only i didn't have to work yesterday, i could have made it to the bank.

Before i left, he said he has some other sleds for sale, and shows me an el tigre 6000, which belongs to his brother. It was dark, rainy and cold, plus we were both in a hurry, so i couldn't get too much info, just look it over. It's a 78-81 in decent shape. Needs a new seat since his pit got ahold of it. It has just been sitting outside since late last winter, track kept off the ground until recently when it got moved. I know that they hit something with it last year, which had bent the metal in front of the hood, but it was all straightened out, and is not noticable.

I was wondering how much i should pay for it? I don't want to rip him off, but i won't pay more than it's worth either. Nobody there likes to drain gas at the end of the season, so i'm sure i'll have to take the carbs apart and give them a good cleaning.

I remember him saying something a year or so ago about looking for $500, but that was before the seat got tore up in the rear, and i beleive it would start up then since the gas was somewhat fresh. I though about offering him $250-300.

Does that sound good, or am i shooting too high/low? Man how i wish i didn't have to work yesterday. :(

Thanks.

Oh yeah, a little off the topic, but this is kinda amusing. While i was there he was showing me two of the sleds out front. A 900 thundercat triple, and an indy 800 triple ( both great looking sleds btw) Now the 800 he has will take the 900, but he seems to think that his 900 thundercat will do 140mph, and that the 800 triple will break 150 easy. :whatever:   I tried to tell him if that is true, then my old john deere 340 would top 80.lol

Firstly, welcome to the site....come back often.

As far as the El Tigre goes, it's hard to say without seeing the sled, not knowing what kind of shape the track, etc. is in, and how well the sled was maintained.
The seat alone will probably cost you a nice chunk of change to replace, if in fact you can locate one.
I personally wouldn't offer over 200 for a sled that age, not knowing whether the sled will once again run, as well as the seat deal, but that's just me.

As far as his sled running 150 easy..... :lmao:

$200.00 on the high side for the Eltigre.
If you get it goin, realize that is is a back buster, there is not much suspension on those old cats.

As for his sleds hitting 140 or 150 m.p.h. I might believe him. at 500+ pounds I believe their terminal velocity might be right around there. So if you pushed them off a BIG cliff or out of the back of a plane at 3,000 feet they may actually hit those speeds. :D

If the 90's 700 triple was worth $300, the El tigre is worth $3 The only use for those sleds are for Vintage collectors, and from what you described, this sled would not be a candidate for that.

As far as the Sleds go, He is probably going from the Speedo, and Cat speedo's are an exercise in creative optimism.

Thanks guys. I'm sure the sled will run again. It ran great last season, just sure that the carbs would definitely need cleaned after sitting all summer and this winter. Other than the seat, the sled seems to be in good shape, and i'm told the track is in good shape as well, altgough i didn't get to see it personally.

As far as the suspension goes, the last season i rode was on a 76 john deere 340 with bogies(sp?), and the el tigre that was there at the time was a welcome change when i got to ride it. Not as comfortable as some of the newer sleds by far, but easier on the body than what i was used to. Kinda wish i kept the deere though. Not very fast at all, but there wasn't anywhere that i wouldn't go, or any hill it wouldn't climb.

The indy was was worth more than $300. It was mint condition. He just need money super fast to close on a house today. It just seems that i never come across great deals, I only hear about them. When i do actually find one, I just a bit too late.

I think i'll just ask him what he want's for it, and hope it's low. That or just offer him $200, and see what he says. I just want another sled to ride, while i have the spare cash to buy one.

Is there any site that shows the value of sleds, like kelly blue blue does for auto's? That way i could print it out and show him if he ends up wanting like $500+

You can go to kbb.com, but they only go as old as '90 for sleds....I don't personally know of other sites with the info. you're looking for....

I don't think even collectors want the late 70's to early 80's cats. Try and fire it up in front of him, if it fires and runs, $150, if not offer him $100. Your going to be putting time and money into that sled, guaranteed.

Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions. I appreciate it very much.

I stopped by today on my way home and looked at it. The track is ok, just a little rust, but not bad. The hood doesn't open correctly, although it looks like an easy enough fix. The front center of the hood, and the "bumper" (not really sure of the name) is off by about an inch.

I also found out what year it is, it's a '79. I don't know if it'll fire up or not, but i'll try with some fresh gas. I know that last season it ran like a raped ape.lol

My bud said that he talked to his brother, and told him that i was interested in it. His brother asked what i wanted to pay, but my friend didn't have an answer since i wasn't sure at the time i had talked to him last. I did tell him that it wouldn't be more than $200, and that's if it will start up without having to tear the carbs apart. If i do have to do the carbs, that's not a problem. I actually enjoy doing it, even have a couple complete rebuilds that could go in it from when i had my last sled.

If anyone here is near sw michigan, the 900 thundercat is for sale for $800. I beleive it's a '99, or 2000. I'd buy it, but i don't have $800 to spend.

I don;t think the T-cat is running right if it can't beat that 800. The 900's are pretty fast.

The 900 runs great, and has had yearly maintenance at the end of each season. I thinks it's more driver related than anything.
