: Squeeked My 700 Ves Engine, And Heres Why (very Odd).....

Hi guys,
Well, not a great weekend. I partially siezed my 700 Classic this past weekend. Initially I thought I ruptured the oil supply line, as it was pi$$ing oil all over the trail. My engine only lightly siezed, and I was smart enough to get some oil down the cyl's, and add oil to the gas as premix. The sled still ran ok, and no real odd noises. I did a compression check and I have 130 psi MAG, and 120 psi PTO. The crank seems to spin very smooth. I am doing a teardown to do a full inspection anyway. Now here's a very odd occurance about what I found. I did not "rupture" the oil line, the oil lines, they melted from excessive heat. The oil supply line, and the 2 feed lines just above the inj. pump all slightly melted causing leakage, and loss of oil to the engine. The muffler is VERY close to the oil lines, but there was no "contact" directly from the muffler to the lines. Something caused my muffler to run extremely hot. I have never heard of this happening on an Edge chassis.
The other very odd thing I have found is someone swapped the carb main jets from the factory specified #440's to #500's !!!!???? This sled was originally from upstate NY, and was mostly ridden in Canada. I still can't figure out why someone needed to use #500 mains in a 700 Classis. I am wondering if the muffler somehow loaded up with "wet" fuel and got so hot it slightly melted the oil lines? I was out on the lake pinned for a few miles or so, then I went for a short trail ride, and that is when the engine started siezing on me.

I would very much like to hear your thoughts on this one..... Thanks,
Rich

That sucks find the proper jet for your elevation Dont hold it pinned burp the throttle or you might find a leen spot like my aunt did, put a hole in her piston {2002 Rmk 700

the vents on your hood slide open and closed, if they were closed you will build up a bunch of heat and you can melt the vents above the pipe. take this from experience...

I'm scratching my head on this one. You have a IQ 700 Classic? Concerned, I went out and checked my 03 700 Edge XCSP, and the oil lines to the pump are not anywhere close to the pipe or muffler, so no, I don't have that problem. Post a picture if you can. Are your plugs running black? Too much gas can ( way too rich) pass thru and sometime ignite in the pipe, which will make it too hot. Did you buy this sled used? 500 mains are reccomended for aftermarket pipe(s) on 700's, any chance the previous owner took the perf. pipe off, put the stocker back on, left the 500 mains in, and somehow moved the oil lines? A long shot, for sure.
Normal operation will see exhaust temps around 1,000+ degrees ( although less at the muffler), so any plastic line close to the pipe is going to melt without proper shielding.

I was also thinking of the pipes, so I did a little digging on the SLP website, and sure enough my current jetting matches exactly what one would use for a SLP twin piped domestic twin 700.
I tore down the top end, and looks like I was spared major carnage. I lightly siezed the PTO side. The mag side looks great, and was spared, as was the crank (WHEW) !!!!!!!!!!

The 2 slightly melted oil lines were the two that went to the carbs, NOT the crank. Looks like the MAG carb oil line never actually melted through.....
The PTO carb oil line did melt all the way through.

So I sent the cyl off to US Chrome for a re-plate, and a new top end and I should be good to go.

check your muffler baffles /failed causing excessive back pressure and overheating
