i recently purchaced a 97 summit 583, it had a jimmy rigged arcticat secondary roller clutch, that wasnt working the best, poor bottom end power good mid and a top speed of only 70mph downhill .motor runs like a top, some times tacking to 9000 rpms ( not good)
can anyone tell proper offset for a skidoo secondary, which my buddy kindly donated to me??the cat clutch only had one shim on the inside?? im thinking the skiidoo clutch should have 2 to 4? but am not shure, i dont want to start wrecking belts? it was good on belts before with old cat clutch, the body width is prob 3/8 in widder on the cat secondary.
the skidoo clutch i acquired has a beige colored spring? i put new pucks and have 21lbs on the fish scale?, hope some boby has some advice before this weekend, for ofsets or number of shims
thanks Dale

Dale, I don't have a number for you. But you can do this yourself. Simply install the secondary and run the sled on the stand. You will see the belt will be nice and even in the clutches...if not, shim accordingly!
edit..wow, look at my old sig!!!!! Sorry guys, I dont post here very often!

Ok, Dale,
It Is To Simple Do Do .
First Remove Spring From Drive Clutch.
Put Cover Back On, Close Clutch With Belt At The Top. This Will Pull Your Belt Down Into Your Driven Clutch.
Now Clamp Drive Clutch To Keep It In The Closed Position.
Now You Can Loosen , Move Or Shim To Get The Belt Straight As You Can, Them Tighten Every Thing. Remove The Clamp, Put Spring Back. Your Done.
We Call It (high Speed Straight).
Works On Any Sled With Any Motor In It.
We Have Been Doing It This Way For 25 Years.

Wow, it's been a long time since I have heard of anyone actually getting that method to work. It worked on the 30HP machines of the 70's, but not so much on todays machines. There are a couple of important settings that you can't set that way. You can't set the offset tilt of the front pulley to correct for torque. And you can't set the center to center. And actually the alignment is going to be off as well. That adjustment is to get you home after some mechanical failure, so good info just the same.
Here is an excerpt from the manual about aligning clutches on your machine. Good luck!
