: Balaclava Question - Mouth Area Freezes
DeeMan 02-12-2008, 06:37 AM I really enjoy the MX helmets with googles.
The problem I have is that with several different types of balaclavas I tried, my breath naturally creates mostiure on the material in front of my mouth. The fabric is right on my face/mouth, therefore the fabric retains moisture all around my mouth.
I assume it slowly wicks away, but not fast enough and my mouth freezes because of the cold, damp fabric laying on it.
I have not tried to use a breath deflector attached to my helmet, nor have I tried to cut a small hole in my mask around my mouth.
Any thoughts on preventing this moisture from accumulating?
Thanks!!
charlo 02-12-2008, 06:50 AM I use a Royal pro TX that has a mesh cut out that I breath through...page 78 in the Royal snow catalogue.

snow4mydooplz 02-12-2008, 07:09 AM Actually, what we do is carry a couple extra ones in the trunk or tunnel bag. Nothing like putting on a nice dry one. When you stop for a break take it out and put it on your vents where the engine is letting nice warm dry air out. When you go to put it on the freesh one it will not only be dry but warm. It feels pretty nice.

puree 02-12-2008, 07:37 AM snow4 is talking about the doo modular helmet,,, with those we have the same problem with our (diapers) getting wet and then freezing,,,, for the mx style helmet, I would think a breath deflector as well as cutting the hole around your mouth would be your best bet. Good luck with it,,,

Actually, I was talking about the baclava as sometimes it does get underneath the mouth piece and get's wet. That on top of that " tampon looking thing" lmfao ( sorry Brian I had too) a nice dry new baclava and mouthpiece always feels better if they get wet.

SnoCat02 02-12-2008, 01:42 PM I had the same problem as you with my MX helmet. With my arctic cat baclava getting wet and freezing up.
I went to Dicks Sporting Goods and picked up a tight baclava almost spandex type material. I throw that on first, then I throw my regular baclava on under that. Works great and dont have any problems.

idooski 02-12-2008, 02:45 PM I just wear a balaclava that has one large opening for my face. Never any moisture problems. I can wear the same one all day.
NewfieBullet 02-12-2008, 08:52 PM I wear a balaclava with a motocross helmet but pull the balaclave down below my mouth, rather then breath through the material. If you try and breath through it it's going to get wet no matter what you do.
snofrog 02-13-2008, 04:10 AM like this
idooski 02-13-2008, 07:24 AM That's the one I wear, right there. :)
DeeMan 02-13-2008, 07:30 AM Okay - I will try pulling the fabric below my mouth. I guess if I attach a breath guard it will block the wind from hitting my mouth,
Thanks for all the responses!!

Do you wear the open face helmet on very cold days? I am talking -10- 20c cold. My nose would fall off if I did that ! lol
I wear my spandex balaclava under my mouth most of the time with closed face shield, and on very cold days I cover my mouth( with neck warmer maybe) and just change it up for a dry one every couple hours I can fit 3-5 of them in my pockets or bag, and with the helmet vents all open I rarely freeze up anyways.

I only wear my moto-x helmet, no matter what the weather. You need the nose piece for it or you'll freeze even in warm weather.
snowrash 02-13-2008, 09:12 PM That looks pretty cool. Does the cold air get in from the sides of the mouth piece or goggles?
Do you wear it for better visibility over full shield?
NewfieBullet 02-13-2008, 09:30 PM The pic is of my old helmet. On really cold days I needed some duct tape under the goggles to seal up air leaks. My new helmet and goggles seals better on it's own.
There are many advantages to the moto-x set-up. It never fogs up, and if you're playing in powder you don't get snow inside the shield. Plus I love the visor on sunny days.
I've been wearing a moto-x helmet for so long now I don't ever remember what it's like to wear a regular full face helmet.
We stopped using those tampon thingies that are in the breathers of the modular helmets.. No problems except as has been pointed out. It's cold and wet after a break, the moisture from your breath accumulates in the cup and you can literally pour it out!

i'm with you.
get rid of all that junk around your mouth and let the air flow!
i've got a mod helmet too-but the mouth junk is gone.
never a problem.
andjayik 03-06-2008, 09:18 AM how about the no-fog mask any one use that?
