This past weekend my 96 EXT blew a hole in the PTO side piston and also damaged the recoil side but not as bad. I am replacing the two pistons and rings but wondering what might have caused it in the first place. I know it was caused by a lean condition but EFI shoulnt have that problem right? The ecm has a long flash and 3 short flashes which means "Open or short in intake air temp sensor". What could cause this code and what should i look for? Also, after replacing the pistons and getting back together i started it up and sprayed ether all over both side cranks to see if crank seal was leaking. I was told by doing this if the seal was bad it would suck the either up and the rpm's would climb but nothing happened. Sorry for the long post but just really looking for what else to check so i dont blow the pistons again. Thanks for any advice. MIKE
Also, how do i clear the code and how do i know if there are any more stored?

check the throttle body boots that go to the motor they are known to crack. also make sure your fuel pump is pumping enough fuel. I had the same problem on mine a while ago all I had to do was put new pickups in the fuel tank one was stuck shut and the other wasn't much better. Now my sled has gone over 300 miles and never missed a beat

The boots seem ok but i did not pull the throttle body and get a good look at them. If the boot was cracked would that have caused the code to check? Also, how do you know if the pump is pumping good. I dont have a fuel pressure gauge. Did you just pull the seat/tank and pull the pickups and inspect them that way? Thanks

the code is your sensor on the airbox its gotta be hooked up but if there is a problem with it your ecu will automaticly sense -40 so that would not cause a lean condition. As far as checking the boots its best to take throttle bodies off so you can get a good look at them. What i did to see if it was gettin fuel i pulled the line and turned the key on i did this in a pail so not to get gas all over it was hardly pumping just a trickle so then i pulled the seat and tank changed the pickups and then she could pump gas like three feet with lots of force.

Also, be sure to check that your oil injection is working.
