Maybe I shouldn't be posting this in the General forum but here goes anyway. I have a 96 670 Summit. A mechanic told me my pto side crank seal looked a bit iffy and suggested I should have it changed. I picked up a new seal and am wondering if I can change it without splitting the case. It has a tiny rubber ridge around the outside and looks like it might just go in. Has anyone done this without splitting the case as the skidoo mechanic suggested I should at great cost? Also, what are the signs that a crank seal it had it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's easy to test the seal. With the engine running, spray carb cleaner, starter fluid, or even WD-40 on the seal. If the idle changes, the seal is leaking.
Can't help you on the removal.. sorry :(

Yep, do the test to see. If it does need replacement, I'd open the case and replace both seals. This will also give you the opportunity to check the bearings, perhaps part of the reason a seal may be failing. If that's a problem, replacing the seal only solves the symptom of the real problem.

Thanks guys I did test the seal and it is in fine shape. No change in engine rpm. As well when I change the primary spring I had a good look at the seal and it also looks in good shape. The whole crank was replace with a new one 3yrs ago and all the seal and bearings were replaced I now find out so Im good to go.
