My exciter enginge is finally running right, thanks for all your tips last season. New season, new problem. My clutch is engaging around 2400 rpms, and if what I was reading is correct, it should be around 3600 rpms, is this problem typically from the weights or the spring on my primary. I've been through the secondary and everything is tip top there. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The spring and weights both have an effect on engagement rpm as well as full shift rpm. I had low engagement on a 93 Phazer but liked it because it did not dig a hole on takeoff. If you aren't racing it's okay. I think Yamaha typically engage on the low side anyway with the stock parts. You could change the primary spring as yours may be sacked out a bit.

believe it or not, a broken or sacked primary spring can cause a low engagement. dirty, binding clutches will increase engagement.

Ok, the next question would be, does anyone know what a red primary spring or one with blue and gold on it means, or what kind of rpm's they should engage at? These 2 springs came new in the bag with my sled. I just didn't know if i should use them.

stock yamaha clutch or comet? those spring colors sound like they are for a comet 108.

I'm assuming stock, the bags said yamaha and had the fork logo on them. I did a little looking but couldn't find a website with a color chart on it.

Not sure, I tossed the bags when I was going through my parts about a month ago. Just doing some housekeeping and not thinking before I acted.

Stock spring for a 1989 Exciter is a gold-green primary spring and a white secondary spring in position A-2

Specs for the gold-green spring are:

Spring rate = 1.25 kg/mm
Preload = 20 kg
wire diam = 4.70 mm
outside diam = 55 mm
number of turns = 5.10
free length = 77.5 mm

Red spring specs are:
Spring rate = 1.40 kg/mm
Preload = 25 kg
wire diam = 5.00 mm
outside diam = 55 mm
number of turns = 5.57
free length = 79.4 mm

The red spring would give you higher engagement because of the higher preload and higher full shift rpm than the gold-green because the spring rate is greater on top of the higher preload.

The only Yamaha spring I can find close to a blue-gold is blue-gold-blue but that is for a Yamaha that uses the YXR clutch and not the YPZ which is on yours.
It's specs are:
Spring rate = 2.0 kg/mm
Preload = 15 kg
wire diam = 5.20
outside diam = 60 mm
number of turns = 4.32
free length = 72.9 mm

If it is this spring that you have you can not use it on your clutch because of the bigger outside diameter.

What weights do you have in the primary? There should be a designation on the side of them that you can see. The stock weight was supposed to be 84M.

Engagement rpm is supposed to be 3700 and full shift rpm should be 7250.

Thanks a lot for the most thurough response I've ever seen. this helps a ton, I'm not sure on the weights yet, I haven't got the clutch off yet. hopefully in the next few days. I'll let ya know what I see once I get her opened up.
