I picked up my first sled last week and as expected the carbs need adjustment and I am finding plenty of info out there on how to get this thing tuned in. What concerns me is the fact that the clutch is not moving the least bit with or without the belt on. I took the clutch apart and gave it a good cleaning and still no luck. I would thing that even with a worn spring you would still get some response.
How far did you take it apart? Did you get far enough into it to make sure the weights were free to swing out and did not bind on the pins? How about the moveable sheave? Did it slide freely without the spring in place?
It should engage at that rpm at least if it is the stock spring which should be white-yellow-white. Did you happen to notice when you had it apart if there were any grooves worn on the face of the clutch weights towards the heel which would cause it to hang up?
I suppose someone could have put in a stronger spring for higher engagement. Stock was supposed to be 3800 rpm. Try revving it up to 5000 or 5500 to see what happens.
Revving it to 5,000 to 6,000 rpm......thats the next problem I can't get it over 4,500 rpm. It hits 4,500 and tops off then backfires. Mixture screw is at one turn out, getting spark, gap is at .028, carbs are clean, any suggestions?
From my experences with the exciters i beleve the mix screw should be 5/8 turn out. I was having the same problem that you decribe about not getting any revs out of it i cleaned the carbs but i missed some thing that was the whole problem. In the float bowl there is 2 small tubes that runs from the bottom of the bowl to the top flange of the bowl. So i decided to look at them again, well when i cleaned them again figuring that i missed some thing i found them sprayed choke and carb in them and then blew them out with compressed air. There was a lot of varnish in them, and when i put the carbs back on it ran like a champ. I hope this helps you out good luck P.s when they run right there a fun little seld.
