Hi, I am new to the forums and have a few questions. I did try a search but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. First I plan to get a reverse kit for my 96 Storm someday but want to gear it down now. That's if I ever find the complete set up. Can I get the reverse gear now and run it until I get the complete reverse kit later? Also what is with all of these different chain types and types of gears? Ex. Hyvo.. Can anyone explain the difference and can you switch to a different style if you change both gears and chain? Would it be advisable to change styles considering I am going to purchase a reverse set up.? I am not sure what I can interchange with. Also I plan to go from a 23/37 to a 21/39 gearing. Is that a good set up for my Storm to mainly ride trails and some open farm fields? I live in Penna and don't run lakes or long wot areas. Thanks..

Not one reply in over a year.. If anyone cares.. Reverse kit and gearing changes are done. Geared down to 21/39 gears and a nice trailable set up. Still looking for primary clutch advice so I can get that accomplished. I have stock sled set up with blue primary and secondary clutch springs. Would like to get my engagement up to say 4200, now it is around 4850/4950 just under what it should be. It think the primary spring is getting weak.. Engine seems to need something to wake it up when it's throttled hard from idle to WOT.. Kinda lags for a split second.. Any suggestions?

A higher engagement RPM would indicate you need a softer Primary spring. A worn spring usually indicates low engagement. You will need to use a spring with less initial force and about the same fully shifted force.
The lag off idle could be carb related or clutch related. Where does the belt ride in the secondary? If the belt is riding flush with the secondary or down in the secondary, the sled will hesitate on acceleration, kind of like taking off in second gear in your car. If the belt is riding about 1/8" out of the secondary, the bog may be carb related. Sometimes a good cleaning will help solve that. Pay particular attention to the pilot jet circuits in the carb, they are very small and easily get gummed up. Make sure all the slides move at the same time and all are starting to move when you move the throttle. Sometimes just adjusting the pilot jet a bit richer will solve the bog. Try going IN on the air screw 1/8 of a turn until the bog goes away. If you have the air screws all the way in with no improvement, the air or fuel passageways to the pilot jet are probably clogged.
Snowmobile World has been taken over by golf bots, it seems. Don't know where the moderators are to eliminate that, but it sure keeps me from posting much on here.
Good luck with your sled!

Ok, thank you. Carbs have been cleaned multiple times, synced and tinkered with by a few guys who are pretty good with 2 strokes. I put Boyeson reeds in and can live with the very minor "flutter bog" for now. Was hoping someone could help me out with a clutch kit that they used and proved it was worth the money. I can't really check the belt right now but everything looked good when I was riding. I did check belt deflection and offset which were spot on and the belt was riding good ion the secondary.
