Hello from Michigan! I'm riding a '01 ZR 800 w/ D&D Y-pipe, D&D single pipe, power breather, V-Force reeds, clutch kit...wondering if anyone has any tech info on what octane gas would be best. I have seen several articles that say in some instances too high of octane will actually make less power due to several factors that I really don't remember. I don't mind paying more for premium gas, but if 87 octane makes more power I don't want to pay more for less! Thanks in advance and...Happy Riding!!!

Well, the octane number mostly depends on your compression ratio,
here's a little chart I found floating around the internet:

CR Min Max
8:1 87 92
9:1 89 96
10:1 92 100
11:1 96 102
12:1 100 108

Typical requirements,some may vary.

Also, note that depending on your mods and parts, you can get "knocking" if you do get that, run slightly higher octane.

Compression is what gives the added power, not the higher octane fuel.Higher the octane, less "explosive" it is,kinda and so it resist the comp.

Hope this help.

Thanks for the info and the chart...your explanation sounds very similar to what I had read last year...I just couldn't remember the specifics about the explosiveness of higher octane gas and the resultant loss of horsepower in some cases. I'm going to stick with the 87...everyone has it and it's usually fresher...especially way north where we ride! Thanks again!
