On my 1996 Panther 440 I'm working on the noise I hear under the hood area.
I was wondering about the chain adjustment?
It has about 5200 miles and the chain case was dry last year when I checked the oil. I have sense put the oil in and thought should and how to adjust the chain.
Thanks

hey, there is an adjustment screw on the side of the case, lossen the jam nut. the bolt should be finger tight only. then tighten up the nut.
thats all there is to it.

If your are hearing noise I'd tip your sled on it's side and take off the cover to make sure the chain didn't damage anything.
With 5000miles ,,It is probably worn out anyway ,,just change it.

Well, if you ran the sled dry of oil, there could be possibilities of burning up the bearings. If ya got the time, pull the upper and lower sprocket off and check the bearings behind them.

Check the chain itself as well. Running dry will heat up and stretch out the chain. If the chain snaps while running at speed many times it will 'pile up' at the bottom of the chaincase and burst the chaincase. That gets expensive.

Hold the chain by one or two links letting the rest hang below. Grab the bottom link and pull sideways. A worn out chain will be loose and allow a lot of deflection to the side. More than an inch or so and the chain should probably be replaced.
