My buddy had his 2002 600 edge and 99 mxz670 HO stolen last night here in Mid Michigan. If anybody knows of anyone that all of a sudden has two sleds like this I'd appreciate to hear about it.

Hope he had them insured. What happened, were they at his house. I know a guy that had two one year old sleds stolen and his new 4 place from a dealers lot down in ohio. #### sucks!!

How can you stop thieves from taking them off of your trailer at night. Any good ideas for those of us that have to store outside on an open trailer?

Never even put machines on it (thankfully) No insurance. If anything turns up, please e-mail an annoymous tip. Stolen from Shorewood, IL by Joliet about 35mi south of chicago on I55.

that really sucks , right at the begining of the season too!!! get a job and get your own loser's.. but this does raise a good question what is a good way to secure the sleds on open trailers??????????? :cussing:

i know a guy who had a good idea. He made a thing on the trailer that went through the track by the shock, went to the other end through two machines, and locked it. The peice was just one inch square tubing. And then he poured a 25 gallon drum full of sement and stuck a ball hitch in there. Then he locked the trailer to the ball hitch in the cement with one of those special locks. no trouble yet. Kinda a pain to explain the lock mechanisme though.

Don't mean to be cold but thieves are only half the problem. If more folks would say no to the deals they know damm well are too good to be true, meaning buying hot parts, thieves would have little/no reason to take the sleds in the first place.
I do however agree with hanging em by their mcnuggets or just lettin the dog chew em off.

Let this be a wake up for you guys that think that you don't need insurance. I always ask for what my sled would sell for or more if the agent allows it, as they only give you low blue book other wise. And if they go for replacement cost even better.

The edge is red and in mint condition with about 2,000 miles. The mxz is yellow and beat. The trailer is a 10 ft R&R tilt bed brand new. Location is just outside of Lansing.

This is something I'm very concerned with. I have two new sleds and an enclosed trailer and feel I've gone taken as much in the way of precautions as possible: Four locks for each corner of the enclosure, chain lock to lock both sleds together while in the trailer, locks on the tie-down bars, and a gorilla guard tire lock that goes around the trailer tire. The D-rings behind my sleds are welded directly to the frame; not the kind you just drill into the decking. All this B.S. will obviously take me a lot more time to fool around with when loading and unloading, not to mention having to take a lug nut off and on everytime I place the lock on my trailer wheel, but I'm not going to take any chances.

You guys are right about the expense of this hobby and the amount that we put into something we enjoy. It's unbelievable to me that one can drive by any number of cabins or motels and see sleds parked out front of the rooms or lodges. This, to me, is an open invitation for the scum bags to have a field day. I'll probably be laughed at during the conclusion to every days ride when I have to take the extra time to load my sleds back into my trailer only to have to repeat the process the next morning, but I'm hoping that it will be enough of a deterence to twart the sled stealing idiots away from my neck of the woods.......knock on wood.

that sucks, sorry to hear it, when we are at home i do not even take the keys out of the sled, but i have three dogs that would chew the heck out of somebody, now when we go places, i take the keys out at the bar or resturant, if i have to leave my sled out overnight, then i might unhook the wiring plug, or shut off the gas. i think this willl give a person a little assurance that the sleds will stay. the dealer that is closest to me has had four sleds stolen over the last few years, so we all know it happens, and i personally insure my sled for more then it is worth just in case some thing like this where to ever happen, or if i had to replace a sled or two. however when we are out snowmobiling normally i will leave the spare on the trai;er with my tool box, and gas cans sitting out. but alas the world is not as safe as we think it is, it would be very unfourtante for some individuels if i caught them steeling my sled as i also hold my conceled weapons permit, . i like what the other guy had to say about the prison and someones itch(-b).

Jon, with my luck, someone would come along w/a flat bed and steal the tow vehicle, trailer, and sleds. ???

A couple of my buddies used to laugh at me 'cause i have the throttle lock that is offered in Cat's catalog...I figure if a thief looks at my sled w/the lock and another sled next to it w/out the lock, I should be OK. Every year we go to St Germain, we hear at least another new story of sleds being stolen.

Good luck in finding those A-holes!!

Yea Jim, you're right. If someone wants something, they're going to get it. But, I also believe in your philosophy of adding to the difficulty in stealing by throwing them curve balls. Throttle locks, pad locks, anything that will deter them and cause them to go searching else where is our only defense. My friend and his wife were in a bar in lower Michigan. No more than 20 minutes. They came out where their sleds were parked next to a row of other sleds. He couldn't get his started, went to pop the hood and it was already unlatched. He thought that he'd secured it prior to the ride, but wasn't sure. But after snooping around trying to figure out why his sled wouldn't start, he noticed that his ignition had been tampered with and some wires were cut. Then he noticed that every sled in the entire row had the latches open. When they couldn't get his started, they just went down the line. He thinks that they eventually got spooked and left before being able to fire one up. This reinforces my thoughts on making your sled difficult for the loosers.

Off the topic, hey "got snow", I see you're from So. Bend. I went to Penn High School, how about you?

The new sleds are harder to do this to than the older ones, but I used to put a small toggle switch on my older Polarises. It would act as an extra kill switch. I don't know if there is any way to get around Ski-Doo's switch.

When I overnight or stop for an extended period I simply remove my belt (takes about 30 seconds) I also have a small magnetic motion sensing alarm which I attach to the sled. This works really well on my heavy touring sled, you would need a least 4 guys to pick this thing up and carry it to a trailer/pickup. :D

I have to say that I don't do anything too special anymore. It seems like that can cause more harm than good. I usually just put locks on the trailer. Which is enclosed and they are more for safety than anything. If the sled sits out overnight, pull the key and call it good. I may get a cable lock for some areas, but as far as I'm concerned, let'em have it. Its insured. I used to go through a lot to keep things locked up tight but it seems like that just makes people mess with it and cause some damage. If I had a choice between damage or the whole thing gone. I'd say the whole thing gone. I have had many a break ins to cars, a jetski stolen. and plenty other things. I don't even live in a bad area. It just sucks that there are people like that out there. I always make sure that my stuff is insured for what it is worth or sometimes even replacement value. I know some may think this is a bad way to look at it and that I may even be causing higher insurance rates but I'm sick and tired of worrying about it and going through all these extra steps to protect my crap. I think the next thing I would do for protection is put some rat traps under the hood or something. :cussing:

ecopter
11-22-2002, 09:49 AM
You know, you've got a good point there. I don't think I'll be as laid back though and still follow through with my precautions. You mentioned the rat traps. Something along those lines might not be a bad idea. Someone ought to figure out a way to totally charge the snowmobile so that when it gets touched, it sends out a shock someone won't soon forget. Just a thought. Zap!

I hear your frustration, but I just can't take that attitude. For me it's not just replacing the sled; I've done a lot of stuff to my sled to make it 'mine', and I'd hate to have to do it all over again because I didn't take the time to lock it up. I have very little free time to work on the sleds so it would be a hardship for me to start from scratch. I agree with the earlier poster who said that you need to make it harder to steal than the other sleds; hopefully then they'll pass yours by.

One night a couple of years ago a buddy woke up to hear someone start up his sled in the backyard to steal it . He's a pretty big guy and he ran out in his birthday suit (in the winter), caught one of the #######s (there was 2 of them) and beat the crap out of him! Almost makes me wish I was there to see it! Unfortunately, a couple of months later someone did get away with their 2 sleds.

Jacqui.

Don't get me wrong, I do try and do a couple deterents but I just don't go overboard anymore. I too make some mods to make it mine. I hear what your saying. jacqui. I also try though to not make mine real noticable either. If its not eye catching then hopefully that'll help too.

I had a rock solid lock going thru the track and the chassis.. just make sure they can't roll it.. completely lifting a sled is next to impossible... unless they come with a whole posse of course...
or you could hook up the chassis to the trailer in some way.

I thought about getting a cable lock and puting it thru the track and skid and hook it thru another sled in our group. Then that'd be hard to move two sleds at once. I just need to find one that will fit into the little glove compartments we have on these things.

1badzr. Shorewood home and auto would not be my first choice for dealership assistance. For the most part they are clueless on anything they can't look up on the computer. I wanted to buy a leftover 2002 sled but they just wouldn't flex on their astronomical prices (this was in early Sept. I hope they sit on their inventory till next Sept.) So I went over by Iowa and got a much better deal. Point is if it wasn't 5 min from my house, I wouldnt bother going in there. What problems did you have?

Fritch,,
Douglas and Frye in Sterling. They had the best deals going and had some of the few red 700xcs' left. Seemed like a decent dealership. Too far for me to go for service, but my experience with them was good.
