: Personal Injuries
Bone Daddy 11-21-2002, 11:37 PM I was just wondering what injuries people have sustained will riding ? Ive been lucky only cracked some teeth jumping off a dam, dislocated my hip, damn pogo suspension ,and the occasional concusion. Some of my friends over the years have had some bad mishaps :0: One got a gash down to the bone standing behind a sled with the track up and spinning "not smart". One was following me over a hill ,good air and drifted to far and caught a tree ,broke his wrist. The other was much worse he played with a tree ! TREE 1 -FREIND - lost spleen, some intestine, bruised lungs and one moth vaction in a U.P. hospital.
So tell us your pain :nervous: and please not to depressing I dont feel like crying :(

Darryn Duncan 11-21-2002, 11:51 PM Had a collision with a tree and won. Scuffed my shoulder portion of my jacket. The only injuy I've had was a torn ACL playing hockey, reconstructive surgery and 6 others to clean it out and remove cartilage and I still can't bend my leg all the way or straighten it out, and the arthritis is a S.O.B.
highlandergerman 11-21-2002, 11:52 PM Have had the normal problems, hurt back, ect, last year my buddy and i were out ridding and he hit a triple jump and bite off the end of his tounge, the worst was we where out ridding a few years ago and came upon a few sleds, and a guy told ,me to watch the foot, i looked down and from just above the boot was part of a bone sticking out. enough said, i can count my lucky stars that nothing like that has happened to me before. and hopefully never will.
Only got bloddy knuckles up to now, that's by tightening those dam motor mounts at -25 and gapping points.

i been lucky no snowmobile related accidents
broke my colarbone 2 years ago when i hit a car head on wit a geo tracker. collarbone broke when i got thrown from the vehicle and caught the edge of the window frame i was only off work for 2 months but i don't think the doctors wanted me to go back yet.
mxz600rer 11-22-2002, 08:28 AM I haven't had any major injuries from snowmobiling. Can't say the same for my sled.
dedi684 11-22-2002, 08:37 AM never been injured, seen lots though and lost a few friends over the years and even last year
ecopter 11-22-2002, 10:02 AM Mine's pretty minor compared to some. Back in the early '80's (some of you may remember when we used to get lots of snow), I was riding my El Tigre 5000 along a road, however, the level of the road was now about 15 feet higher. I was runnin' pretty good with my buds and all of a sudden, the level of the snow decided it wanted to go back down to the original level of the road. It did this because there were some trees near that area that caused the snow not to build up in that spot. So......I fell vertically about 15 feet to the ice covered road and I couldn't stop the inertia of my chin being planted on my handlebars. It hurt like a son-of-a-gun but I was more worried about the big bowl I was now in and how I'd get out. I eventually made it home and when I was taking off my face mask, it stuck to my chin because of all the frozen blood that was pooled on the lower part of my face. I had no idea that I'd even been cut, let alone a huge hole that I'd ripped in my chin. It's funny that things start to hurt once you know they're there :cussing:
So, my dad ended up taking me to the hospital where I got tatooed with a needle and string. Back then it was cool to have a battle scar like that to show all your friends. Now, it flat out sucks!
Jon
catrules2000 11-22-2002, 10:53 AM I think I might have you guys beat!!!!! 1998, hit a tree and it won. Punchured both Lungs and managed to fill them with blood, got a cuncusion obviously, and fractured 3 Vertebrate (sp). Spent 12 days in Intensive Care at the Traverse City, Michigan Hospital and was released after the 14th day. Definetly not something I want to do again. To top it all off, it happened the Wed. night before Thanksgiving, ruined my season from there. Didn't really hurt the T-Cat though, I took most of the Tree! :0: :nervous: :cussing:
dpaige 11-22-2002, 11:19 AM Can I play too????
84EVR 11-22-2002, 11:36 AM hey depaige expand a little on the pic.
dpaige 11-22-2002, 11:43 AM It was actually a motorcycle accident.
130mph get off = 1 plate, 4 pins and 20 staple.
It's a damn good thing I'm a southpaw.
This is why I convert all my sleds to twist throttles,
It healed very well though and doesn't bother me at all unless I ride with a flipper throttle for more that an hour at a time.
With the twist I can ride all day.
I never had any accidents with a sled, but I broke quite a lot when I was "young and wild" and playing around with mopeds...
4 broken arms
2 broken fingers
2 broken legs
1 broken foot (plus another one where the doctors thought it was broken, but it actually wasn't)
1 broken toe
The last couple of years I've been taking it easy with breaking stuff.. But 2 weeks ago I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing, and got a meat knive thru my index finger... Maybe it needed stitching, but it was too much work to go to a doctor and all that crap ;) The pic is from a couple of days after "the incident"
Just remembered... I once dropped off my Mach Z while a friend was riding and I was passenger.... We went about 120km/h over water with a lot of ice rocks in it. He was afraid we would sink so he didn't dare to stop so he dragged me around for a couple 100 meters ;) Well I can tell you it hurt like hell at that moment.. But I didn't have any injuries at all.. Not even a hole in my clothes!
charlo 11-22-2002, 12:40 PM I've broke my collar bone on my XL 600. Cut a birch tree in half on my ZR 440(thank god it was -25). Both where close calls when I was younger that smartened me up. Hopefully no more accidents! When I think back on some of the stupid stunts I've pulled...
rob7374 11-22-2002, 01:05 PM The list is just keeps on going. Nothing too serious thankfully but hurt none the less.
- blown out right knee
- 4 broken fingures
- torn tmj ( jaw joint tissue and muscle - no more cheap helmets )
- torn left rotator cuff twice ( second time I pushed the capsule right thru the tissue but not the skin.)
Then of course there is always the numerous sprains and strains that we tend to loose track of. When I was 16 none of these injuries would have hurt that bad. Once you hit 30 this crap sure hurts. I feel every injury every morning but none keeps me from riding.
Muskoka.doo 11-22-2002, 01:39 PM ;) Ok I will bite.
Right knee surg X 4 (Mountain bike)
T6 spine # (Motocross)
Head Inj (Motocross)
Open right leg # :nervous: (Mountain bike)
Blown a nut lifting my sled once
This one happen while I was working.
stabed just below the forth rib from some old lady who was out of her tree. Hurt just a little luckly for me it was just a pairing knife.
The Student 11-22-2002, 01:48 PM Cracked sternum coming off of a jump when the throttle stuck. I had to let the machine go, and when I landed, the chin piece of my helmet came down and hit me in the chest. I had a good 15 to 20 feet of air, so my ### hurt for the next week as well.
jacqui583 11-22-2002, 01:58 PM Hmmm... should I mention the time I broke my tailbone toboganing? That's kinda on topic, isn't it?
Jacqui.
Snow-Drift 11-22-2002, 02:05 PM It's no wonder some of you guys pay so much for insurance. Good grief! I feel like I'm listening to my dad tell war stories from his experiences in Vietnam!
I myself have just taken knocks on my motocross bike. Hit my knees on the handlebars one time while flying over the top of them, you know those motorcycles get a mind of there own sometimes when you take jumps. Had the "wind" knocked out of me one time. That will happen when you land in a field of sage brush after having your knees get knocked on the handle bars after flying over the top of them. I've never broken a bone though I'm proud to say. I cut an extensor tendon in half though just last year in a freak grinder accident though

Limskii 11-22-2002, 08:06 PM I've been lucky on my sleds, a couple wipeouts over the years but no injuries. I did however wipe out my streetbike (1984 GPZ 550), when I was 16 (young, dumb, & full of c#m) at about 100km/h on pavement (learned about road rash on my back and knees and displaced my hip).
Also, summer of 2001, my right foot was 95% amputated while riding my three-wheeler in a sandpit and my foot hooked a piece of steel strapping which also got tangled in my wheel. Once it tightened up my foot followed as it got torn off and wrapped around the axle. Fortunately, I had an excellent surgeon and my foot is back on and I can walk normally (can't run), but do have poorer circulation and a little arthritis, no big deal !

As Dad told me about 10 years ago (I'm 46) "Enjoy it, it only gets worse" (Pain from earlier injuries) If I had known then what I know now, I think I would have been nicer to myself. :D
1973: 3 broken ribs, hyperextented left elbow (Moto Cross)
1974: Sprained lower back, torn tendon in left knee (Moto Cross)
1975: Dislocated ribs, left shoulder sprain, broken tailbone (Moto Cross) Did I forget the nice tire marks on the back of my helmet? :D
1975: Sprained lower back (Trampoline)
1976: Severe Neck sprain (Almost broke it!) Diving Accident
1995: Torn Maniscus Cartilage (Engaged in fight at work) ((I'm a Corrections Officer at a Maximum Security Mens Prison))
1995: Fallen Arches from walking too many miles on concrete and tile floors
2002: Herniated L4/L5 (Is it any wonder?) :D
BGTRK19472 11-22-2002, 09:18 PM Lost my front tooth once, that was a cold and nerve racking ride home!!!
TallCool1 11-22-2002, 09:21 PM Damn Lims, can you even begin to remember or describe the pain from that injury??? It's a miracle that you can even walk after that. How many plates and pins do you have in your leg?
ecopter 11-22-2002, 10:44 PM Jim,
Unfortuately, I see that stuff all the time. Limskii, I don't doubt that the pain was intense, but Jim, you'd be suprised with injuries like that. Most the people I see with traumatic amputations don't complain about that, but rather the scrapes and scrathes they have. It's completely ridiculous, but the body has a strange way of coping with trauma. We picked a guy up that was totally mangled from the waist down from a bush-hog accident. You know what he was hurtin' the most from......his broken finger. It's enough to make you say ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
Jon
paidncash 11-22-2002, 11:43 PM I'v never gotten hurt on my sleds but when i was younger i had a hell of a time with my threewheelers.
1. Broke both collarbones
2. too many second degree burns to list
3. broke tibia and fibia on left leg
4. broke all toes on left foot
5. had my left foot get caught in the rear sprocket and ripped off middle toe and doctor had to sew on two others
6. one compression fractur and two herniated discs in my back
7. torn legiments in left knee on motocross bike
Some days when i get out of bed in the morning i can hardly move, it takes me a little while to get moveing.I cant imagine what i will feel like when i get older.
jd-zrtrider 11-23-2002, 01:45 AM broke l1 vertabrae landed a jump badly 4 months off work 8 days in the hospital rode last season no problems- no pain
numberone 11-23-2002, 08:03 AM just last saturday november 16th, I was out with my brother in law. we where riding both my sleds when i got a bright idea, hey lets have a drag. well i lost controll on some ice and flipped my RMK :nervous: It sent me flying and when i landed i crushed my right foot :0: , i came to a sudden stop when my jaw came in contact with a metal post just under the hemet line and the side of my neck :p . my bro said he thaught i was dead  , i sure felt like it. Five years ago, i hit a bump or hard packed snow and the little TXL340 went on it's side, my left knee went in the spinning track and the metal clips had a great time chewing up my knee and everything inside :hallo1: . I am almost 42 years old, i think it's time to slow down? :( ???
Wolfman 11-23-2002, 09:18 AM Damn guys, y'alll are makin me nervous!! :nervous:
Me, no broken bones, no sprained anything. I guess that I don't take too many risks.
Worst I've had were seatbelt marks when I wrecked a car years ago. I still have restricted side to side movement on my neck from that one. I also got a knot on my head when a lady made a left turn directly in front of me when I was driving a company van.
Only one hiking incident, where I gouged a chunk of skin off of my shin when we wandered off trail and was wading through brush so thick that you couldn't see where you were going.
I had ground some gravel in one hand back in high school when I hit gravel on a bicycle while on the brakes.
Nothing serious here. :D
Limskii 11-23-2002, 11:24 AM ecopter, I agree with you about the pain thing, as when the accident happened, I didn't feel any pain, just a slight burning sensation in my foot. I was alone in the pit and about 6 miles from my cottage, so I had to untangle my foot, then kick start my bike by hand (which was flooded), and drive back to my neighbour's cottage for help (with my foot dangling by a little skin). You know what hurt the most once I woke up from surgery ? My badly blistered left hand ! Thank god for shock and adrenaline though.
By the way some of you guys seem to be injury prone as you've built up quite the lists of injuries :(
TallCool1 11-23-2002, 11:41 AM I know what you mean Jon about the pain.
Never broke any bones. Only accident I've ever had on a sled was when I was in about the 5th grade. Was riding circles around the house and hit a patch of ice and slid into the neighbors brick house. Left me w/about 6 stitches above my right eye and about a dozen in the valley of my right cheek and nose. Knock on wood, no serious injuries in all the years.
sled-head 11-23-2002, 11:43 AM Thats crazy limskii..........The worst I have had was a broken toe chasing my dog and stubbed the little #@&*@ thing . I cried for a month ;)
NHIcegator 11-23-2002, 02:29 PM How about a stupid shop boo-boo,Today I was installing sure clamps an a trailor for my boss.
Well he left to get bulbs for his xlt and I needed to move his mxz back a few feet to drill and bolt the clamp on that side, stupid me first of all wearing sneakers at the shop, second I braced my foot at the end of the trailer and gave a mighty heave, rolled the damn studded track right over my big toe :cussing:,tore my sneaker and gave me a nice sore toe to hobble around on for a while :(
grippper 11-24-2002, 12:18 PM I was going across a lake right before dusk, runin about 80mph and a nother guywas comming from the otherside at about 80mph and we bothe hit head on. I broke my thumb. feamer, tibula, fibula all compound fractures. i now have a titanium left leg. and yes i still ride. oh and the other guy was drunk 3.0 blood test
Rhoades 11-24-2002, 01:10 PM I played Lacrosse in college. Had more bruises, breaks, and at least 7 concussions (my memory is a little crappy for some reason!!). Dumped a bike at 70mph in jeans a t-shirt and a helmet once. Damn I am a wreck!
Bone Daddy 11-24-2002, 04:21 PM Well Iwas just wondering about sled injuries but WOW!!! That sounds like some of that might sting alittle. Im glad to see your all able to ride.
ZR006CatMan 11-24-2002, 07:59 PM I have only broken both my wrists. Thank god they weren't at the same time.. lol.. All dumb things too.. The first was seeing how fast my Mini-bike would go on pavment. That sucker did about 35 mph untill I lost control and went over the handel bars. Luckely All i realy did was break my hand. Then Year or so Later rolled a 4-wheeler again doing stupid stuff. R dosen't stand for Race. :withstupid: Other than that nothing major. But I am only 21. So who knows what is in store.. But you guys didn't slow down till 40's... I have had enough broken bones.. I slowed down all ready. Can't afford to spend 2-3 months in cast any more.. :-)
