I bought a new 2012 Yamaha RS Venture GT a couple of months ago.
It has less than 200 miles on it. When I put it in reverse often times there is a very loud squeal and the machine won't move. I looked and measured the drive belt and it's within wear limits. I'm about to bring it back to the dealer but would like to have a little "heads up".
This is my first snowmobile and I'm trying to learn.
My guess is you are right that the squeal is the belt slipping - the question is why. If anything in the drive system is locked up the belt will slip (it is the 'weakest' part of the drive system). Are you sure it is completely shifted into reverse? They can be finicky. Sometimes my buddy with the yammi's need to use a swift kick on the lever to get it in/out of gear.
Otherwise something may be messed up in the chaincase.
Hey the squell is your belt! Firstly if you jack up your sleds rearend to let the track turn you'll hear no squell, this will happen in forward too. It's the deflection issue most Yamahas have,it's adjustable via the secondary clutch-3 little bots on the inside sheave. These have different thickness shims(washers) under the bolt, there is only one per bolt, take out the washer if belt is new or low mileage,as the belt wears you can install these washers back to keep proper deflection. These bolts open up the distance between the sheaves(without the washer)and close the distance with the washers.Thats your quick adjust.
