Greetings, looking at these current or year old Yamaha sleds, and don't know which one is best for me, I ride mostly smooth, fast trails, lakes (need lots of speed here) and rivers, with occasional ditches, lots of questions... How fast are the 4-cylders motors, how much hp does the triples have? How HEAVEY is the Apex, It seems Yamaha doesn't tell you any thing in their brochures. At least Cat told you weight and hp.
Engines are great, they are HEAVY. The Apex motor puts out about 150hp, the Nytro about 135, Venture about 120. If you have never driven a 4-stroke put on a little seat time. The power is just different - slower to spin up but it just keeps pulling.
On trail is ok, but there is a reason they added power steering (even though it adds another 18 lbs to the sled). You will get an arm work-out on a long day.
Are your rivers frozen up solid or prone to slush? You don't want one of these stuck!
A friend of mine started with an rx-1 when they first came out, then got an '06 attack, then got an '08 Nytro MTX. He got so frustrated with the weight and lack of climbing ability of the '08 that he got rid of all of them and picked up a Polaris Switchback Assault last year - no more 4-strokes for him. Too heavy to go where he wants to go - but we mostly do off-trail...
Thanks for the response Laine, I mainly ride the crow river, wright, carver counties, up and down, wow didn't know that the pwr steering ADDED that much more weight! yikes, didn't think of it like you said, ie, they needed it, here I thought it was just a nice feature.... I have never ridden a 4-stroke sled, so after 35-40 years of beloved 2-strokes, I prolly would never get used to em..... I dunno, would like something lighter than my zl-800 now but just as fast, if not faster.......
