I just bought a used 2002 Viper ER for my girlfriend and when I got it home on the lift, I noticed that it had a torn out stud. It appears that the studs are Woody's 7mm 1" Gold Diggers. Some are bent, but not too bad. Anyway, I tried to burn the edges to keep the cords from pullin out or fraying. This pic is from before I did the work, what do you think? Can I just keep an eye on it and ride it?

i had a 96xcr600 that i rode all season with about five of those. if there's just one like that i wouldnt worry about it. there are places that do track repair but i dont know what the cost is. might not be the safest thing in the world, but i'd live with it. did you check the heat exchanger?

If it was on the edge I would be concerned, but it isn't so ride and forget about it. It happened at the strongest point of the track.

Thats not bad at all. I would run that without any worry.
As long as its not ripping. That hole looks pretty clean.
Ive driven with worse.

on this site in the tech area i think there is information where those can be repaired. if not there are places to get them fixed.

I agree with paul.
Just from the picture that track and studs look new. It might be worth having that replaced just to avoid having to trash all of that becasue that hole some how got worse. However i still say its ok to drive without causing anymore damage.

I think it depends on how you ride. My buddies since deceaced ZRT tore a stud hole and he didn't think anything of it. Well, 100 miles later I am behind him and all of a sudden there goes the track at say 80-90mph. It hooked the back grab bar and came back around and smacked him in the back and the back of the helmet. We were so close that once it let go I rode over it and went up on one ski, boy was that fun.

well, I burned all the edges on the opening the other night. I also removed all the studs, put locktite on them and reinstalled. Some were loose. A good goin over sure is important. Thanks for everyone's help, I think I'm goin to let it go for now and just keep an eye on it.

I got a couple of those too....what did you do to it? I hear you are suppose to burn it a little bit???? I just really don't have the cash to buy a new track right now but would really like too! Besides, we don't have any snow anyways!!!!!!! :cussing:

I burned the edges lightly with a propane torch. As for the studs, I put on more locktite and retightened for now. As for the bent ones, I talked to Woody's and the owner Mark Musselman who was kind enough to send out 48 of the 5/16" studs for me. I am going to replace all the 7mm studs with the 5/16" which also have a larger head and washer. I'm going with the Gold Diggers 1.075" Which have worked well for my other Viper. I have to say that I've had a couple of dreams about the track coming apart at top speed, but now I'm not too worried about it. WHen I got my package from Woody's, I noticed that Mark Musselman actually had his shipping dept send me 96 studs and washers.
Great person to work with, and a good product.
Heh Heh,,, pretty bad having dreams about stuff like this. :D
