I don't know a lot about reeds and was just wondering if all snowmobiles have reeds. Is it a carb vs. EFI thing? Thanks in advance and sorry for my ignorance.

No not all sleds have them. 4 strokes do not use them because they have valves. 2 strokes do use them but not all of them. A 2 stroke was designed to be light and compact therefor no camshaft or valves. Normally a 2 stroke has either reeds or rotary valve. Both have there grins and groans. The trend now is towards reeds and it doesn't matter if it has efi or is carbed.

It all depends on how the manufacturer designed the intake system.

There is a good tech article on reeds right here at the SW.com Technical Area:

I am going to kidnapp Kevin Cameron and force him to live in my garage and tinker with my engines.

He will be fed on a per horsepower gained system.

I believe this is resonable, and I will gladly allow others access to my new found knowledge for a SMALL(large) fee.

please email or PM with specifications and horsepower requirements of your project.

I am hoping to have a 2 stroke weed wacker that makes 1 hp per cc next summer.

I sure hope the FBI isn't reading this

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm kinda dumb on the subject because my last sled was a '95 Wildcat, which as I understand didn't have reeds, since it was a piston port motor. Now I have a ZL 800 EFI SS, so I want to learn more about them.

All wildcat engines are a combination of piston port / reed design.

The old 440, 500, 530, 650, 700 were of the same design.

The new reed engines are far better in my opinion. :)
