Friend of mine was told by the Polaris Dealer to use a higher octane in his sled because he was having problems. He started using some Aviation fuel. The sled lasted about four trips and blew the motor. Octane booser might be better than using racing fuel, I here that those guys tare down the motor after every race. Just my .02 cents worth..... ???

Race fuels will accually make your sled have less HP.

Race fuel just burns slower and makes less heat. It resists detonation and pre ignition and is a much for high compression engines that will detonate with pump gas. But if your sled runs on pump gas USE THAT. More power, Easier starting, Cheaper. What more can i say.

If your sled is rated for 87octane and you want to be safer just run 91. I run 91 in all my sleds and never had a motor failure. I acually did pre ignite a engine on a lake filled with 87. But it wasnt mine. It was Skidoo R&D.

At $3.00 a liter I hope you didn't go too crazy with the compression on that trail sled over the summer. If you do have a sled that was built for race fuel (high compression) then you can try VP or Elf . You will need to discuss octane requirements with your engine builder as several fuels are available. I've had good results with VP & Elf. They are similarly priced as well. Just make sure you don’t buy more than you can use before it goes stale.

There is nothing like the sweet smell of race fuel.

Aviation gas is a no-no period, it burns too dry, has little if any lube ability. Normal stock car fuel could have worked, but is not necessary in stock sleds.

Becareful on the type of octane boost you choose to run.I tried Silkolene because it was supposed to be good,it reacted with the plastic fuel tank and i wound up having to replace all the brass in the carbs. :cussing:

I use 50/50 Torco and 93 Octane in the Mach. I can run it on strait 93, but with the advaned timing, and the low amount of fuel I use, it is just cheap insurance.

But av gas is bad. There is no lubricant in the fuel, and will predetonate.

Also, be careful, some race gas is oxigenated. I know Sunoco 110 is oxigenated, so you have to watch the jetting.

There are so many misconceptions out there about race gas, av gas, and octane ratings, that it makes me laugh.

Here are a couple of sites that will explain some of it:

Fuel Basics (http://www.ericgorr.com/techarticles/Fuel_Basics.htm)

Av Gas (http://www.ericgorr.com/techarticles/avgas_excerpt.htm)

There is TONS of information out there if you care to search.

Race gas won't hurt your engine, but if you don't need it, don't use it.
Octane has NOTHING to do with the power output of the fuel.
Octane boosters are a bad idea, unless you get stuck with a lower octane gas on the trail, and need to be safe.
Ethanol in two stroke gas is a very bad thing -- avoid at all costs if you can.

If you're running a modified engine, ask your tuner which fuel he recommends.

We use ELF Pro Plus 110 (leaded) in our dirtbikes, but I run regular gas - 87 octane in my sled as it's stock, and has a fairly low compression ratio -- no need for any more detonation resistance.

I agree with LB700, if you do not understand the reasons to run race gas AND have a valid reason to run it, you are wasting your time and money. Even on my race sled I sometimes do not run straight race gas. If I am running the high compression heads and running at the snocross track, I will jet down about 6 sizes and run straight race gas. If I am running those heads on the grass or hill climb, I will cut the gas 50/50 with 93 pump gas since you are only running for short distances. But even then I am really careful on jetting and constantly blip the throttle on the return lane. Also, if you modify the airbox or run filter pods, you will affect the jetting. If you are attempting to run race gas in a stock sled, it will burn at too low of temperature and you will be fouling out plugs and burn super rich, not to mention waste your money.

I like the Turbo-Blue gas (115 Octane) and Phillips 66 makes several good race gases, running from 110-120 Octane.

LB 700, Those were fantastic links! It starts to give you guys a look at why I say it took three years and a ton of money to develop Extreme Power Fuel Additive. There is a lot more involved than 99% of the snowmobilers understand! Also, and this is a BIG point, after all of the research and testing, that is why the stuff is not cheap and sold in WalMart. Real chemicals that work are not cheap. This is the best thread I have read in a month! Those links are "must have" links for all sled owners in my opinion. Thanks LB700 !
