Haven't been out there this year, but went last year.
the bad:
the trails are beat to hell, and the groomers suck. there is people everywhere, and snowmobiles are street legal in town (totaly nuts). the speed limit (45 mph) is kind of anoying. i did not see an officer on the trails for the week that we were there. sleds go ~20 mph slower because of the altutde. make sure you re-jet before you go.

the good:
the scenery is AWSOME! i have never seen such cool looking trails. you can get just about anywhere you want by snowmobile. moutains are really cool looking. pm or email me if you want to see pictures. off trail riding is very cool, again, scenery is the best i have ever seen anywhere, bar none. its like riding in a story book.

the verdict:
I would go again. would be nice if the trails were groomed nicer though... we started tralering to the trail heads, and riding like that... too dificult to ride out of our cabin.

 The Park is only open from Flagg Ranch the south.
The route from West Yellowstone is closed to sleds NO SNOW!
The area around Towogatee is ok for now but after this week it may look a little bleek from so many sleds.
The Big Horns suck! no matter what the owners at Bear Lodge say.
It has not snowed there in three weeks and it was bad then...don't waste your time or money to stop in the Big Horns go on to Dubois.

Hope this reply is not too late, just found this forum.

Just returned from West Yellowstone and Island Park.

Trails close to West yellowstone were somewhat whooped, further up the trail the better conditions. Two Top and Lionshead were in great condtion. Many good places to play on ungroomed off these trails. Trails near Island ranch are bumpy close to town, great as you get further away and up in elevation.

Funny thing all the locals kept apologizing for lack of snow, but I thought everyting was great.

If you do the Yellowstone park tour, you shoud do it with a small group, and take 1/2 day instead od full day. Come back to town, eat and head back out to the better trails.

Again, Hope this is not too late, We also went out in Mid Jan, and found some Great play areas. In the valley's the snow was marginal, but up in the mountains the snow was great! If GREAT powder is your thing, hire a guide, it is well worth the money! Here is some pix of the crew. Hope you like!
