my largest pet peeve
remember the days we used leaded gasoline, this was real good fuel and it kept far longer than todays fuel, one can understand why we don't use lead anymore considering the environment and such,it's just the way it was announced to us," we are taking the lead out of gasoline " the government said at the time.the use of lead made a poor fuel better because it kept the octane level, now we use chemicals.lead was an additive so we're not taking the lead out of gas,we're just not addding it any longer

Considering what lead does to the body I am just as glad it is out of gasoline. I think this one was less about what it did to the environment and more about what it did to people that inhale the exhaust fumes...
Now this ethanol they are forcing on us here in the States!!! Bad for the price of food, bad for the fields, bad for the engines, can't store gas for any length of time!!
What was worse was the MTBE that was placed in gasoline to "oxygenate" the fuel similar to what alcohol does now. What a fiasco that was.
Without governmental subsidy, I doubt that growing crops for alcohol in lieu of food would make economic sense, unless the alcohol was produced as a by-product of the food. It would be great to see wood-scrap derived methanol converted to ethanol instead of just burning the debris piles from logging. Hopefully, the scientists can figure out a way to do it cheaply and efficiently!
