regular unleaded gasoline costs us in this area $5.31 a gallon,this is the eqivalent of $4.43 us,if my math is correct and using canadian prices per liter

It's all in the taxes. Federal gas tax in the us is only $.184/(us gal). According to wikipedia, your excise tax varies from $.30 - .$60/(us gal) and on top of that you have local sales taxes (gst and pst). They are applying taxes to your taxes!
